The CIA is officially acknowledging the existence of Area 51.

TBH, I'm not sure what to do with this confirmation, but I felt the need to acknowledge their acknowledgement.

So, due to travel needs (my dad needs to be back at work on Monday), my parents, my brother, and I will be spending Christmas Day driving the ~20 hours back to North Carolina from Missouri.

So in order to compensate for that, we decided to treat Christmas Eve as Christmas Day and everybody got up too early this morning despite half the family being sick with colds! :D

a report on the day )

Probably won't be able to get online tomorrow, since I'll be in a car, and then when I finally get back online I'll be avoiding LJ until I can get hold of the DW special and watch it. So happy Christmas to everyone who celebrates it, happy December 25th to everyone who doesn't, and happy holidays to all! Hope it's a good one! ♥♥♥

The bad: I hit up the local Barnes & Noble intending to use the gift card in my money clip to get caught up on the three Animorphs re-releases I didn't yet own. But they didn't have The Encounter. Curse you, B&N! Are you prejudiced against hawks? Is that what this is?
I did pick up The Message and The Predator, though. And spent entirely too long dwelling over the DVR reference and the change from "Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood" to "Sesame Street" in the beginning of The Message.

The AWESOME ENOUGH TO MAKE ME FORGET BARNES & NOBLE'S UNFAIR DISLIKE OF RED-TAILED HAWKS:

Two missing Doctor Who episodes have been recovered! They are not episodes from serials noted for their high writing quality, but WHO CARES ONE/VICKI/STEVEN AND TWO/BEN/POLLY/JAMIE I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW

SO HAPPY

I honestly didn't really expect them to find any more of the missing episodes in my lifetime, but THERE YOU GO, TWO OF THEM AT ONCE.

Clearly we need to be running Public Service Announcements and getting people to scour their attics and basements and storage closets looking for other episodes.

(THERE IS A CLIP OF THE RECOVERED GALAXY 4 EPISODE here and it is AMAAAAAAAAZING, OH VICKI ILU AND OH HARTNELL YOU ARE MAGIC)

First, NaNo:

Recursive: Currently at 13,013 words and (hopefully temporarily) blocked. Luka is on the verge of death in a hallway no one else can get to and he doesn't have the energy to go anywhere else. I am not sure how this happened nor how I can fix it. SOMEHOW IT WILL GET FIXED. I hope.

One Spared To The Sea: Currently at 10,542 and despite being about 3K words behind Recursive I'm feeling a lot better about it at the moment. Kate and Máirín have finally met properly and Máirín's coat has been stolen and hidden and they are not getting along well at all. So, that's got a little momentum starting to build up.

Second, TV:

My Little Pony: Today's was a RARITY EPISODE. I AM SO HAPPY. Rarity and Sweetie Belle! Srs, this episode filled me with so many happy feelings I can't even express them. TO THE SPA.

Grimm: So I gave this a shot. Two episodes' worth, anyway. I'm not feeling it. I don't know if it's the characters, the concepts, or that I just don't need another vaguely supernatural-influenced crime procedural in my life, but I'm not feeling it. I might give it another episode to catch me or I might not.

Once Upon A Time: I also gave this two episodes' worth of a shot, and I'm loving it so far. Everything about it. The characters, the concept, the worldbuilding, the relationships, the potential. Although right now I'm kind of feeling like it would've been better off a self-contained miniseries, given the way the plot seems to be shaping up; I'm open to being proved wrong.

Psych: The superhero episode alternated between making me really happy (I love when the boys are massive dorks) and really annoyed (really, Tap Man? I know Gus loves his tap-dancing, but he loves his superheroes, too; he would've come up with something better). Still not enjoying the heavy-handedness of the Shawn/Juliet stuff, but whatever, it's not my ship and therefore I'm not the target audience. I still enjoy the show more than I get annoyed at it, so overall it's doing a lot better than most shows six seasons in.

Also, I've been doing sporadic marathons of Farscape and just finished season 4, and ARGH I FORGOT HOW AWESOME/HEART-BREAKING/SHOCKINGLY AMAZING "Bad Timing" IS. Everything from the "Previously On Farscape" montage to the silent credits. EVERYTHING ABOUT THAT EPISODE. Everything.
Now I just have the Peacekeeper Wars and I'll have finished my Farscape rewatch and won't have any excuse to put off shortening my "shows people keep recommending to me but I haven't watched yet" list.

My new computer has arrived!

She's a Sony Vaio, and she's incredibly sexy and shiny and portable and fast, and she's been officially named Shanne. Shanne Bradley, to be formal.

Yes, I am the dork who names her computers after Pogues songs and the rest of her gadgets after Doctor Who companions.

I'm already in love with her. I just need to get used the keyboard, which is sized differently from Sally's, so I'm going to be trying to do as much typing as possible before Tuesday, when Shanne will become my main hardware for NaNo.

New love is always so shiny, isn't it? :D
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: mlp: fluttershy)
Wow, today was a weird TV day.

First I started by catching up with this past week's Alphas, "Blind Spot". You being gone and you being different is the same thing. )

Then I switched gears and watched the first episode of the second season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Don't judge me! Oh, no! I'm very glad my friends want me to be the best that I can be. )

And then I switched gears one more time and watched today's Doctor Who, The God Complex. She'll say that we can't accept it because it's too extravagant and we'll always feel a crippling sense of obligation. It's a risk I'm willing to take. )

So yeah ... kind of a weird and inconsistent day, TV-watching-wise.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (mus: tss: glen & mar)
This week's Alphas: AWESOME. So basically Summer Glau needs to be in EVERY SHOW EVER playing a crazy brilliant girl. Other high points: development of Bill's relationship with his wife (and the fact that he's worried about any kid of his possibly being an Alpha is fascinating); Rachel being extremely clever about using her abilities to her advantage; Gary's act of rebellion and then successfully tracking down Nina and Skylar ("it has to be purple"); Nina being protective of Skylar even though she says they're not friends (and the Nina/Skylar road trip ♥♥♥); Dr. Rosen's final moment of ethics. EVERYBODY GOT THEIR CHANCE TO SHINE. IT WAS AWESOME. Favorite episode so far!

Dresden Files: Finished reading Ghost Story and all I can really say is WTF. It makes sense now but I'm still reeling over all those developments and revelations. WTF, JIM BUTCHER. WTF. But Fitz and Daniel can be regulars now, right? *hopeful* ...I kind of fell in love with them both over the course of the book, which on the bright side distracted me from the TOTAL LACK of any actual Ramirez appearances.

The Pretender: Finished season one! It's official, I'm addicted. Somewhere around episode nineteen I realized that I had at some point fallen in love with Miss Parker. You're awesome, Miss Parker. Not totally sold on the mythology/world building yet, but completely and utterly sold on the characters, so I'm in for the long haul.

AWESOME THINGS:

- I have Internet back! WOO! And LJ is also back! Also woo! Stop leaving me, Internet access and LJ! I have dependencies!

- I now own a full-length black duster. We will not discuss the fact that it is early August, regularly reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and also southern Virginia. The point is that I now own a full-length black duster and this makes me happy even if I can't wear it for a few more months. (It was $15 at a CHKD thrift store. I can't resist that, okay.)

- New Doctor Who trailer! It is almost the same as the ComiCon trailer but not exactly and those not exactly bits are EXCITING and AWESOME. PTERODACTYLS, MAN.

- I received a $25 B&N gift card from my Secret Santa for my place of employment's Christmas In August thing. NEW BOOKS! Now I just have to find time and a bus route to get to a Barnes & Noble!

So, Illuminights officially opens Monday with an employee preview tomorrow night and what this means is NO MORE INSTALL which means NO MORE 16-HOUR SHIFTS until Illuminights strike, probably, which will be near the end of August) and also means that I (theoretically) get actual days off again. I got home from my last 16-hour shift at 4:30 this morning, immediately went to bed, and then got up at a more reasonable hour of the morning to find...

...

New York has passed their marriage equality act!

Way to go, New York!

*celebrates*
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (mus: dm: wicked sensitive dudes)
This morning I got Unexpected!Rew which was awesome. He and his fiancée are driving up from Florida to Maine and decided to make a stop in Williamsburg to see me. YAY. :D I had to work, so we went out to breakfast beforehand and then they dropped me off at the park. I wish I got to spend more time with them. They said they might be able to drop by and see me again on their way back nearer the end of the summer.

~

It's looking like starting next week they're going to switch my regular days off from Saturday/Sunday to Wednesday/Saturday. On the one hand, having two days off in a row is nice; on the other hand, having the week broken down into two manageable chunks will also be nice. I think I'm okay with the switch, but we'll see how it actually plays out once I'm on that schedule.

~

On the grounds that I've missed, like, a month doing this meme, I'm just going to go ahead and do the last two at the same time. Under the cut to spare your flists.

This thread makes me want to see a Darths & Droids or DM Of The Rings -style webcomic based on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic so badly. I am being completely serious here, I think it would be amaaaazing.

There's also this thread, which works on the same principle but uses a different RPG system.

17. With the best music.

I am not a good judge of this, okay? I have minimal music training. But I'll offer up "You Could Drive A Person Crazy", Company. I love the music here.

So I just got back from my local hotel sojourn, and I had an awesome ~19 hours!

Seriously, I need to find a way to make this a semi-regular feature in my life. That or find a way to afford to live alone.

Introverts of the world unite! ...from a distance, preferably!
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (c: s: bb!destruction)
Bullet points!

♠ I put my name on the AO3 waiting list, so we'll see what happens when that comes through and I actually have to. You know. Do stuff.

♠ I have officially booked a hotel room for this Wednesday. With check-in/check-out times it'll be more like 19 hours than 24, but that will still be immensely helpful. Isolation ♥♥♥ [/antisocial]

♠ Today I hit up a Borders clearance sale. And it's not that I'm happy they're going bankrupt, because I'm not, at all, it's really sad when bookstores can't stay open. But I did walk away with ~$80 worth of books and paid less than $8 for the lot. ...There was not a lot left on the shelves or I would've probably spent more than that. But y'know.

♠ There are evidently massive Doctor Who spoilers going around, and I would just like to alert everyone that, as much as a spoilerphile as I am, I would still appreciate not being spoiled about this. Please and thank you.

♠ Sometimes I feel sad and then I remember that I live in a world where Neil Gaiman wrote a Doctor Who episode and everything's shiny again. This is an oversimplification but nevertheless true.

♠ I wish I was in New York today to do the DW LineCon. MATT AND KAREN HANDED OUT DOUGHNUTS, YOU GUYS. WHY WAS I NOT THERE FOR THAT?

♠ I have finished Vol. 1 of The Swamp Thing and find myself getting annoyed by Alec Holland's unceasing emo. I suspect this is in part because every issue seems to feel the need to recap the first issue and I get frustrated at being repeatedly reminded of stuff I already know. (Also, they footnote everything. "After X happened, we knew we had to do Y!*" "*ed. note: as seen in issue #12" and I'm sure this was probably helpful to people reading one issue a month or whatever but for someone going at a faster rate OMG IT IS SO ANNOYING.) Also Matt and Abby have been MIA for much of the latter part of the volume which is frustrating because I find myself caring more about them than about the Swamp Thing himself. Maybe Vol. 2 will be an easier read?

♠ That was a really long bullet point, I'm sorry. Evidently I have more ~feelings about old comics than I suspected myself of.

...edited to fix tags and close a parentheses. *facepalm*
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: dw: river song)
*flails all over everything*

So I watched the new Doctor Who trailer and got all excited and flaily and excited like an excited flaily thing, so then I had to cap it and go over it bit by bit so I could pinpoint exactly what I was flailing over. Turns out it was EVERYTHING, so here, have the product of my excitedly flailing capping.

chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (b: ani: omg yeerks!!! D:)

Look what came in the mail today!!! SO EXCITED. Also, the covers look way better in person then they do in pictures. Creepy and unsettling the way morphing should be.

I'm actually really impressed by how they handled re-editing the text. I've only finished reading The Invasion, but so far the only changes I've noticed have been continuity-based, not time-period-based -- the KASU about how thought-speak works has been fixed, and Elfangor and Visser Three's first conversation has been edited to be canon-compliant with The Andalite Chronicles, and it's all very low-key and close to the original. Admittedly there aren't a lot of pop culture references or contemporary tech in that one to be updated, but what's there stayed the same.

I do wonder how they're going to manage book #16, though.

ETA: Okay, into book two and hit a tech update. 'listening to your CD player' has been replaced with 'listening to music', which, if they have to update, I approve of; it takes out the archaic 'CD player' reference, since I doubt there's a lot of preteen kids running around with portable CD players these days, but doesn't insert 'mp3 player' or 'iPod' so I can still pretend this is happening in the 90s. It's vague in a good way.

So [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest has closed its doors, which is very sad, but [livejournal.com profile] queer_fest has opened to take its place, which is quite nice, and is now open for prompting. *pimps*

As we speak, I am watching Christopher and His Kind. Thoughts coming once I have finished it, probably.

A list of unrelated awesome things:

Being Human has been picked up for a fourth series! I don't know what's going to happen but I am so excited I can't even you guys. I can't even. Also, curse you Peter Jackson and your casting decisions. CURSE YOU.

♦ I have a new mouse! This is probably not exciting to other people, but my old mouse was driving me crazy; it would double-click when I wanted to single-click, or sometimes it wouldn't single-click at all, and I gave up successfully drag-and-dropping some time ago because it just wouldn't. But my new mouse does all that on the first try and it's so nice to have a working mouse again! Also it is wireless. I've never had a wireless mouse before. It's nifty.

♦ Today's mail brought me a shipment of two Sandman volumes (specifically, A Game Of You and Fables And Reflections). OMG YAY. My dead-tree Sandman collection is coming along nicely. ;) Amazon gift cards were the best invention ever.

♦ Speaking of Sandman (I know, I said it was a list of unrelated things), BUT ANYWAY, Sandman crossovers started eating my brain awhile ago, and in my various quests to actually write one of them I have stumbled upon a Sandman/Andromeda crossover that actually seems to be working. OMG YAY. I miss finishing fic. ...of course, now that I've said that, I won't be able to finish it. Or I'll finish it and discover it sucks and vow never to let anyone else see it. But right now I'm quite liking it.

Animorphs: The Radio Drama (Uncensored!) has gotten their site back up (and redesigned!) and added a couple old shows. Old to them, new to me, I mean. ILU, ARDU guys! You make me smile. :D

♦ Miss [livejournal.com profile] nikiness has returned to LiveJournal fandom! Admittedly it's Supernatural fandom which I am not in, but I'm just bouncy and glad that she's returning to LJ at all. YAY. :D

♦ I'm looking in to renting a local hotel room for a night. If I can manage it, that would be ~24 hours I could have totally to myself and omg it would be so welcome. The problem is finances, as the problem so frequently is, but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to manage it.

Kagerou, which everyone should be reading if they are not already, has just started a new plot arc that looks like it's going to be, frankly, AMAZING. And game-changing. And awesome.

♦ I switched the e-mail associated with this account to my GMail address, so now I'm getting my LJ notifs again. I hate not getting notifications in a timely manner.

What little, probably-insignificant-to-most-everyone-else stuff going on in your life do you think is awesome? SHARE THE AWESOME.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (t: ith: hundreds of stories)
AWESOMELY, I managed to finish my Amy Pond/THE UNIVERSE vid, which I'm really happy about because the idea's been in my mind for MONTHS. It's uploaded to YouTube and I'm just waiting for the MU upload to finish before I start pimping it out.

It's really nice having vidded something that I actually want to show to other people again.

You know what else is nice? Tomorrow the fam and I will be headed down to Durham to catch the In The Heights tour. SCORE. ♥♥♥
