Oh my God if you haven't yet checked out today's XKCD, do it now. I've been playing with it off and on all day and I think I still haven't seen the whole thing. Wow. Randall Munroe, dude, you have my admiration and bewilderment. (My favorite part is either the pirate ship or the dude selling lemonade.)

Unrelated, have a meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] othercat:

Pick a trope from this list and provide a fandom/pairing and I'll tell you something about the story I'd write for that combination (i.e. write a snippet from the story or write not!fic or tell you the title and summary for the story I would write)

1. genderswap
2. bodyswap
3. drunk!fic (ie: somebody is intoxicated)
4. cooperate or die
5. pretending to be married
6. secretly a virgin(because who cares) secretly a parent
7. amnesia
8. daemons
9. forced to share a bed
10. matriarchy
11. historical AU
12. accidental-baby-acquisition
13. apocalypse fic
14. telepathy
15. Star Trek AU

I promise to do my best with whatever you give me, but you'll get a better outcome if you ask for something I'm at least passingly familiar with ...

Some thoughts on media I consume:

▼ Obtained and watched the pilot of Continuum, because Lexa Doig. (Lexa! You were not in this enough, I hope you get more screentime in future episodes.) There was bonus William B. Davis, too, that's always nice. Oh, God, the future society is awesome. In the really-interesting-to-watch way, not the place-I-want-to-live way. I really love the way the justice system works there. They don't even bother bringing the perps in themselves, just inject them with (something?) that puts them in pain if they don't bring themselves in, that's awesome. ♥
And then TIME TRAVEL and CULTURE CLASH and INTRAGROUP CONFICT oh God, this show is hitting all my narrative kinks. Well, not all of them. But a lot.
Alec reminds me of both Topher and Harper. That's not a complaint. Kind of a low-key, low-self-esteem, low-drive variation, though. Also not a complaint. I like him already.
Kiera's a pretty straightforward version of the trope, but they pull it off. She's not very hard-edged, but she's clever and determined and capable and you believe she can get the job done. I like that she adapts to being in 2012, but she doesn't do so immediately or flawlessly. She's not a great liar.
No, seriously, the best part of this so far is that I like both sides. I like Kiera, I like Ingram. I like Alec, I like the rest of the Liber8 group (I want more information on them, tho). Blurry lines between the good guys and the bad guys = awesome.
I kind of predicted the twist at the end re: Alec, but it still worked well.

Altogether, a good start to a new show.

▼ After entirely too long, I have successfully finished reading Vol. 2 of The Swamp Thing. Sadly, my dislike of the title character has not decreased at all. I also really disliked Mark Millar's take on Abby, though that might be because it was really clear he didn't like her. I dig Tefé a lot, though. Apparently Vol. 3 is supposed to focus more on her, so I'm hoping that will make it an easier read. I also found myself like Constantine far more than I expected to; once I finish Swamp Thing I'm going to have to tackle Hellblazer, I think.

▼ So Elementary looks kind of interesting. On the one hand I am hopeful because LUCY LIU; on the other hand I have no hope because CBS. But I'll probably give it a shot. I'm an easy sell on Holmes adaptations anyway.

Kagerou is updating again, which makes me extremely happy even as the actual updates depress the hell out of me. I just want to give Kid a hug. And Dark, if he promises not to info-dump traumatic memories into my head. And Fuuka, too. She needs a good hug.

▼ Jenna-Louise Coleman has started filming on Doctor Who! I am excite. XD Why are there no spoilers about her yet some of us require those to live

This thread makes me want to see a Darths & Droids or DM Of The Rings -style webcomic based on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic so badly. I am being completely serious here, I think it would be amaaaazing.

There's also this thread, which works on the same principle but uses a different RPG system.

17. With the best music.

I am not a good judge of this, okay? I have minimal music training. But I'll offer up "You Could Drive A Person Crazy", Company. I love the music here.

Does anyone know regular expressions well enough to put together a BrosweScraper cbw file? I've been trying to make a working cbw file of Antihero For Hire but I can't figure out how to code it to find the next comic without manually listing the whole thing one strip at a time. Which will take forever.

Help?

15. By your favourite musical composer.

"Another Hundred People", Company. Stephen Sondheim = ♥ [/predictable]

A list of unrelated awesome things:

Being Human has been picked up for a fourth series! I don't know what's going to happen but I am so excited I can't even you guys. I can't even. Also, curse you Peter Jackson and your casting decisions. CURSE YOU.

♦ I have a new mouse! This is probably not exciting to other people, but my old mouse was driving me crazy; it would double-click when I wanted to single-click, or sometimes it wouldn't single-click at all, and I gave up successfully drag-and-dropping some time ago because it just wouldn't. But my new mouse does all that on the first try and it's so nice to have a working mouse again! Also it is wireless. I've never had a wireless mouse before. It's nifty.

♦ Today's mail brought me a shipment of two Sandman volumes (specifically, A Game Of You and Fables And Reflections). OMG YAY. My dead-tree Sandman collection is coming along nicely. ;) Amazon gift cards were the best invention ever.

♦ Speaking of Sandman (I know, I said it was a list of unrelated things), BUT ANYWAY, Sandman crossovers started eating my brain awhile ago, and in my various quests to actually write one of them I have stumbled upon a Sandman/Andromeda crossover that actually seems to be working. OMG YAY. I miss finishing fic. ...of course, now that I've said that, I won't be able to finish it. Or I'll finish it and discover it sucks and vow never to let anyone else see it. But right now I'm quite liking it.

Animorphs: The Radio Drama (Uncensored!) has gotten their site back up (and redesigned!) and added a couple old shows. Old to them, new to me, I mean. ILU, ARDU guys! You make me smile. :D

♦ Miss [livejournal.com profile] nikiness has returned to LiveJournal fandom! Admittedly it's Supernatural fandom which I am not in, but I'm just bouncy and glad that she's returning to LJ at all. YAY. :D

♦ I'm looking in to renting a local hotel room for a night. If I can manage it, that would be ~24 hours I could have totally to myself and omg it would be so welcome. The problem is finances, as the problem so frequently is, but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to manage it.

Kagerou, which everyone should be reading if they are not already, has just started a new plot arc that looks like it's going to be, frankly, AMAZING. And game-changing. And awesome.

♦ I switched the e-mail associated with this account to my GMail address, so now I'm getting my LJ notifs again. I hate not getting notifications in a timely manner.

What little, probably-insignificant-to-most-everyone-else stuff going on in your life do you think is awesome? SHARE THE AWESOME.

Clips from the upcoming episode of Doctor Who. AMY. She's fab. ♥

First-Person Tetris. It is really hard but also fantastic. Thank you, xkcd rss feed, you always share awesome things with me.

Lostpedia theorizes about this week's episode. Lostpedia, y'all are awesome.

Related: Here is my possibly-spoilery-but-not-really prediction: not really spoilery, but what the hell )

Also related: Look, I has a shiny new LOST icon!

Finally, this week's Daisy Owl is possibly too adorable for words.

Scroll partway down this entry for an adorable story of when Randall Munroe met Neil Gaiman, but not the reverse. Awww.

Also linked to in that entry is this edit of the recent heartbreaking xkcd comic about the Mars rover Spirit. The edited version is a lot less depressing.

...In non-Randall-Munroe-related stuff, have links to some YouTube videos I am currently enjoying!

Oceanic 815 - Side By Side, a comparison of the original crash of Oceanic 815 and the S6 altverse.

"Falling Slowly" Jennifer Damiano & Adam Chanler-Berat, er, what it says on the tin.

Endway - It's My Life - Live at Tainted Blue Studios, in which a band I love records a song I love.

A Goofy Movie - Stand Out (Max Version), why yes I am a total loser dork :D

Muppet Babies: I'll Be Blue For You song, Gonzo sings about Camilla, awww.

ETA: Now with new Side By Side With Susan Blackwell! With bonus Lin-Manuel Miranda! The awesomeness. It is almost too much.

YOU GUYS IT SNOWED.

Like legit snow, like four inches, not like usual North Carolina ~snow. I know four inches is not objectively a lot, but this is coastal North Carolina.

My mom was supposed to fly up to New York today to visit the older sister for a week but her flight was postponed 'til tomorrow because of the snow.

So yeah.

Er, in other news...

- I am doubtful about the validity of the LOST 'leaked first four minutes of 5x01'. Mostly based on the fact that virtually none of it is new footage.

- I have unexpectedly scored a $15 iTunes gift card. I have so far spent ~$5 of it (I got Raul Esparza singing O Holy Night and I am attempting to rent The Great Muppet Caper because I am a geek but it's having some difficulty downloading). Any recommendations on what to spend the remaining $10 on?

- [livejournal.com profile] bwaydaily's general consensus on Corbin Bleu appears to be that he's surprisingly good as Usnavi. I am so curious about his performance, negl.

- There is webcomic wank at fandom_wank, omg. It's hilarious. But someone in the comments linked to Darths & Droids and I spent last night archive-binging. Tragic, really. I'm now caught up and subscribed to the RSS feed. Are there any other webcomics I should be reading but am not? Because I should really just get all the archive-binging out of the way at once.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (xkcd - what did you say?)
My xkcd book came today! *flails* It is shiny and pretty and signed by Randall and the back art is amazing and I don't understand most of the annotations but the extra drawings are adorable and I LOVE IT. <3 <3

There is also new Sarah Jane, but I haven't gotten it yet. :( I BET IT IS SHINY AND PRETTY, TOO.

...Mostly I am just still gleeful over finally getting my copy of the xkcd book. :D :D :D
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (The Black Donnellys - Jimmy)
...I need to stop spending money.

(Today I bought two Discworld books plus the Doctor Who "The Beginning" DVD set. All excellent purchases, but still, I need to stop spending money.)

(In related news, I am still waiting for my signed copy of the xkcd book. Or even a shipping notice, I would take a shipping notice happily. COME ON, RANDALL. Please? I realized when I ordered it that I would probably regret ordering a signed copy, but I thought that would be because of the price hike not the interminable wait. *sadfaces a bit*)

(Also in related news, omg how much do I want this shirt? SO MUCH.)

...um.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Doctor Who - Eleven)
Restructuring the whole BTIS 'verse in my head. Considering giving it a nonlinear structure (but not quite sure how that would work with the main storylines) or possibly a framing device (maybe a Behind the Music sort of thing? but who would do a BTM thing on a band that's just kind of a big deal on the Internet?) but the current structure isn't working for me. In any case, if I'm doing it for NaNo, I still have a month before I have to actually have a structure firmly in mind.

In other news, I haven't left the house in several days. I am fairly sure that most people would consider this a Bad Thing. Can I self-diagnose myself with Avoidant Personality Disorder? Because I think it might fit.

It's not like I'm actually getting anything done...despite the mental restructuring of BTIS, it's not like I'm actually writing anything. I finished backing up my music collection, which is...only important if you're crazy and OCD like me. I am considering applying as a researcher to one of those text-message-search-engine thingies because then I could earn money without leaving the house, and also I can't find any jobs I'm qualified for in my actual field. So, yeah, basically I'm not doing anything. At all.

Blah.

Um. In the 'less depressing' category...uh...I forgot I preordered the Kings DVD box set, so getting the shipping notice cheered me up a bit. Yay, Jack! I sold another book on Half.Com. There is new Glee and Dollhouse this week (right?) although no new Psych. I've got like half a dozen things being shipped to me right now...I hope they arrive soon.

Oh! And I've now been introduced to the ridiculousness that is xkcdsw. I think this is my favorite of the ones I've seen so far.

And we have chocolate chip cookies and chocolate frosting.

...I kind of fail at life a bit.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (xkcd - plead the third)
So is everybody reading this week's xkcd series? Because if not you should be. Because it's AWESOME.

More to the point, does anybody know if Nathan Fillion is reading it? I know somebody on the RSS feed claimed to have tweeted him a link, but I don't know if he actually saw said link or is reading it. If not he should be.

Also, "no, that's the opposite of true" and "things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously" are awesome lines and I'm going to be stealing borrowing at least the first for my Better Than It Sounds 'verse because it's exactly the sort of thing Liam would say to Kyle.

Speaking of.

cut 'cause it's long and probably not of interest; rambling about worldbuilding and original fiction and why I rarely have any actual writing to show for the hours I spend on it )

> Teh Niki's definitely out of the Boston trip. :( I'm gonna call the airline and cry at them and see if they'll transfer one of the plane tickets to a different name, since I already know I can't get a refund. If I can, I'll transfer her ticket to my dad's name. No go - tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. Blah. Going to try to get my dad to scrape up the cash for his own ticket. Tickets bought! Managed to get him on the same flights. :) Going to Boston with my dad won't be the same, but dammit, I'm going to Boston and I'm going to see my Shane if there's any possible way I can make this trip work.

...you know what I would like to see? A Doctor Who/xkcd crossover. With Black Hat Guy and Black Hair Girl as the Doctor's companions. He would be TOTALLY APPALLED by them and their methods, but they would accidentally save the universe through the liberal use of explosives and hacking! And velociraptors. And crossbows and lightsabers. And they would reverse-engineer the TARDIS and then start growing their own. Without the Doctor's permission. And they would critique the scientific holes in the Doctor's technobabble! And epic hat wars! AND IT COULD BE AWESOME.

This complete randomness at least partially inspired by the fact that there now exists in the world Black Hat Guy/Black Hat Girl fic! And it is good.

So. brief thoughts on Pushing Daisies 2x09 The Legend of Merle McQuoddy )

Fandom Wank is featuring wank about a recent xkcd strip. By which I mean they are mostly featuring complaints from people who don't understand the difference between nice guys and Nice GuysTM. Or who think Randall Munroe is somehow advocating the behavior of Nice GuysTM. Or who think Randall Munroe doubting the existence of genuine nice guys and relationships that grow out of friendships naturally. Or who, for some reason, think Randall Munroe is a Nice GuyTM himself. *flail*
