Hello, LJ! Sorry for going MIA this weekend. But I spent it with my Nikiness, who really needs to make more time for me in her schedule, so. Things happened.

Also I spent today making sugary food to send to my no-longer-baby brother in California.

Also today I got my copy of the Now. Here. This. cast recording in the mail! \o/ So once I've had the chance to listen to that, expect gushing of some sort.

things

chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: dw: 3/liz)
First the depressing one:

Caroline John has passed away, and I don't know what to say. I'm only familiar with her Doctor Who work, but Liz Shaw was one of the greatest companions, due largely to Caroline's skill. The Whoniverse is that much smaller now, and it's a terrible loss.

Less depressing and totally unrelated:

♦ I've reached 50K on my Camp NaNo, which on the one hand is nifty because I've reached my wordcount goal nine days earlier, but on the other hand this story is not quite half finished. I think I'm going to take the weekend off from this project (see next item) and then decide whether to keep pressing through on it now or to use the second half as my August Camp NaNo project.

♦ I will be spending this weekend with teh Niki and her boy, which is long overdue; haven't seen her in waaaaaaaay too long. There's a Big Damn Shindig in Norfolk on Saturday, so we'll be hitting that up. Shiny.

♦ I don't have anything else to talk about.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (c: s: dream)
A list of unrelated awesome things:

Being Human has been picked up for a fourth series! I don't know what's going to happen but I am so excited I can't even you guys. I can't even. Also, curse you Peter Jackson and your casting decisions. CURSE YOU.

♦ I have a new mouse! This is probably not exciting to other people, but my old mouse was driving me crazy; it would double-click when I wanted to single-click, or sometimes it wouldn't single-click at all, and I gave up successfully drag-and-dropping some time ago because it just wouldn't. But my new mouse does all that on the first try and it's so nice to have a working mouse again! Also it is wireless. I've never had a wireless mouse before. It's nifty.

♦ Today's mail brought me a shipment of two Sandman volumes (specifically, A Game Of You and Fables And Reflections). OMG YAY. My dead-tree Sandman collection is coming along nicely. ;) Amazon gift cards were the best invention ever.

♦ Speaking of Sandman (I know, I said it was a list of unrelated things), BUT ANYWAY, Sandman crossovers started eating my brain awhile ago, and in my various quests to actually write one of them I have stumbled upon a Sandman/Andromeda crossover that actually seems to be working. OMG YAY. I miss finishing fic. ...of course, now that I've said that, I won't be able to finish it. Or I'll finish it and discover it sucks and vow never to let anyone else see it. But right now I'm quite liking it.

Animorphs: The Radio Drama (Uncensored!) has gotten their site back up (and redesigned!) and added a couple old shows. Old to them, new to me, I mean. ILU, ARDU guys! You make me smile. :D

♦ Miss [livejournal.com profile] nikiness has returned to LiveJournal fandom! Admittedly it's Supernatural fandom which I am not in, but I'm just bouncy and glad that she's returning to LJ at all. YAY. :D

♦ I'm looking in to renting a local hotel room for a night. If I can manage it, that would be ~24 hours I could have totally to myself and omg it would be so welcome. The problem is finances, as the problem so frequently is, but I'm hopeful that I'll be able to manage it.

Kagerou, which everyone should be reading if they are not already, has just started a new plot arc that looks like it's going to be, frankly, AMAZING. And game-changing. And awesome.

♦ I switched the e-mail associated with this account to my GMail address, so now I'm getting my LJ notifs again. I hate not getting notifications in a timely manner.

What little, probably-insignificant-to-most-everyone-else stuff going on in your life do you think is awesome? SHARE THE AWESOME.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: bh: ot3 ♥)
Just got back from spending the weekend with mah Niki babe. IT WAS AWESOME, YO.

Have not yet seen the Being Human (UK) S3 premiere and missed the first five minutes-ish of the current showing of the new Being Human (US) so I'm going to watch both of them later tonight and you will get my thoughts then.

Um. Yes.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (mus: pogues: shaney mac)
Word count: 9423. Including a slang glossary which I'm counting because as of right now I think it's necessary to include it in the novel. (Okay, the truth is I showed the first chunk to mah Niki bear and she got confused by the slang so now there's a glossary.)

Nalini has declared herself to be a much more significant part of the plot than I was expecting. But I think I'm okay with it, I'm also enjoying writing her more than I expected.

Although one significant chunk of what I wrote today is not at all going to survive editing, I'm pretty sure.

I am writing to you from teh Niki's couch. Yayyyy!

And now for the last installment of 30 Days Of Who:

Day 30 ♥ Whatever Tickles Your Fancy

this may kill your dialup )
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Andromeda - welcome to Seefra)
I spent today with teh Niki. Who is awesomesauce incarnate. Trufax.

...it was a good day. Exhausting. But good. <3

I missed a day with this meme, so here's two at once:

Day 20 &hearts A hobby of yours

...um.

I collect musical theatre recordings.

(That totally counts as a hobby, right? Collecting stuff?)

I have ~50 recordings of Chess. Possibly this is a warning sign of either a hoarder or an obsessive personality.

Day 21 &hearts A recipe

Triple Chocolate Brownie Cookies

Ingredients:
3/4 c. butter, cubed
4 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate
2 c. sugar
4 eggs
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. baking cocoa
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. semisweet chocolate chips, divided
2 tsp. shortening

Directions:
In a small saucepan over low heat, melt butter and unsweetened chocolate; cool. Transfer to a large mixing bowl; add sugar and eggs. Beat until smooth.

Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; gradually add to chocolate mixture. Stir in 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours or until easy to handle. (This is important! Your dough will be more like brownie batter before you chill it--it's okay, it'll firm up in the fridge.)

Drop by tablespoonfuls 2 in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees F for 7-9 minutes or until edges are set and tops are slightly cracked. Cool for 2 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.

In a microwave-safe bowl, heat shortening and remaining chocolate chips on high for 1 minute or until chips are melted; stir until smooth. Drizzle over cookies. Let stand 30 minutes or until chocolate is set. Store in an airtight container. Yield: 6 dozen.

UPDATE TIME!

> Spent the past couple days with my Niki, which was fab as always. <3 <3 We should move to Boston and starve together, y/y? GET ON THAT, NIKI BEAR.

> As a result I missed this week's LOST. Thoughts coming as soon as I watch it, yo.

> I have however seen these three clips and also this one and I cannot wait until The Eleventh Hour.

> Also, they opened up prompt claiming at [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest so people can claim a second prompt, and I did. Why? Because I hate myself, obvs. ...this time it's a Doctor Who prompt, so. We'll see how this works out.

> Happy April Fools! Any good pranks yet?
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Sliders - dorks unite!)
These pictures make me really happy. [Spoilery for...the new TARDIS interior. Also, KAREN GILLAN WEARING TROUSERS.] Isitmofftiemyet?

Related happy-making: The Red Button clip from the first minute of The Eleventh Hour, the extended trailer, and the released clip from Vampires Of Venice. somewhat spoilery reaction to the last that if you've seen the clip and you know me you probably already know what it will be )

Unrelated: I finished my initial read of AWoM on Saturday, but am holding off posting a reaction until I finish a (much slower) reread. Fast reads of new books are awesome because you get to devour the whole thing at once, but you do wind up missing things, so...reread!

Do I get a Niki tomorrow? I think so!
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Chess - play the game)
Today:

- Our bathroom sinks have finally reached the point of being fixed. There are gaping holes in our kitchen ceiling, but the sinks work, so.
- I played a lot of Russian Solitaire. And lost a lot of Russian Solitaire. Russian Solitaire is hard, yo.
- I saw my Niki!!!! This is obv the most important item on this list. She brought her boy with her and we went to Muddy Waters and then to Bojangles and her boy got somewhat lost on the trip between "coffeehouse" and "food". And she gave me stuff which to make awesome cupcakes with and I gave her fudge and this shower curtain. Yay belated Christmas gifts!
...I miss my Niki. She needs to come see me more often. *hints loudly*

Back from teh Niki's!

Missed tonight's Glee; we hit a write-in instead. ♥ It was kind of amazing, I really enjoyed it. I'm glad we got to go. Lots of geeky fun was had by all. (Plus, peppermint hot chocolate. Yum.)

...I'm very tired now.

Current word count: 28,592
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Animorphs - RDU - you fail)
[off of a discussion unrelated to my jacket]
ME: Is that my jacket?
NIKI: Yes.
ME: It's on the floor.
NIKI: Yeah, well, you don't work, it's different!
ME: ...I don't understand?
NIKI: Just trust me, it is.
ME: I don't work, so it's different that my jacket is on the floor?
NIKI: What? No. You don't work so your sleep patterns are different.

I am looking forward to Halloween. Have I mentioned that yet? Teh Niki and her boy and I are going to see Evil Dead: The Musical. I have purchased a white T-shirt especially for the event. It's going to be awesome. ...also, I just really miss my Niki.

My brother is going out in costume as Operation. It's adorable.

I have been thinking about Christmas presents. I have no idea what I am getting anyone. Except my dad. I have an idea for my dad. But other than that, clueless. Bah. Humbug.

Unrelated to anything: Belle, Mulan, and Giselle should under no circumstances be considered Disney princesses, even though they usually are. Discuss.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Broadway - [tos] - cute)
Spent the past two days at teh Niki's. Very emotional. I miss her already. :( A lot going on.

Leaving on Thursday, spending tomorrow packing and laundrying and things of that nature. Start work on Sunday. Aaaahhhh. Still don't have Sally back.

Um. Working slowly backwards through the flist to check out everything I missed.

Oh, yeah, the Tonys. Thrilled by Karen and the HAiR tribe's wins. Pissed about Hunter and Raúl losing. Very much not happy about the Billy Elliot sweep, but not as pissed as I would be if it had been a Shrek or RoA sweep instead. (Although seriously? WEST END TRANSFER. The book, the orchestration, the set design, the lighting design, the choreography, it's all YEARS OLD. Why is it winning creative Tonys again?) Neil was a great host -- best laugh of the night was his dig at Piven, and the song at the end was amAHzing -- and N2N and HAiR and WSS had great performances. I wish they'd invited [tos] to perform. Also, Lin was adorable AS USUAL and I geeked out over Hunter and Jeff being ADORABLE.

I...don't know.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Doctor Who - Six/Peri)
That meme that's going around:

In a nutshell: I list 15 of my pairings and you all tell me if you see reoccurring trends/similarities/parallels/cliches in any of them.

1. Charlie/Claire - LOST
2. Harper/Beka - Andromeda
3. Ian/Barbara - Doctor Who
4. Kyle/Tess - Roswell
5. Jack/Tosh - Torchwood
6. Jimmy/Joanie - The Black Donnellys
7. Rembrandt/Wade - Sliders
8. Jack/Joseph - Kings
9. Olive/Alfredo - Pushing Daisies
10. Tobias/Rachel - Animorphs
11. Carlos/Molly - The Dresden Files
12. Kit/Dairine - Young Wizards
13. Spot/Racetrack - Newsies
14. Walter/Molokov - Chess
15. Roger/Collins - RENT

It's ridiculously hard to narrow down my pairings to fifteen, let me tell you.

Spent the last two days with my Niki. ♥ I LOVE YOU NIKI I MISS YOU ALREADY. We need to live closer to one another. Or she needs to come get me more often. Whichever.

Problems with Sally continue. In negotiations with Genesis to get her fixed. Cannot survive without my laptop, guys, but don't want problems to continue and/or get worse.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Animorphs - sarcastic)
This is the background information you may need for this anecdote:

1) My family is not terribly talkative. Or whatever. We're not the kind of family who sit around regularly and have lengthy conversations about...anything. At all. I swear days go by when we don't actually say anything to each other. We get along okay, we just don't talk.

2) MTV aired all six Star Wars movies this weekend. Episodes 1 and 2 on Saturday, 3 and 4 on Sunday, 5 and 6 today.

Now that you know that.

We watched all six Star Wars movies this weekend, and actually had conversations about it.

These included such things as the little brother and I getting into a shouting match over the validity of midichlorians (I REFUSE THEM, he thinks they make sense), my brother realizing for the first time that Liam Neeson played Qui-Gon Jin (which somehow spawned an argument where my dad and I tried to convince the little brother that Liam Neeson's wife passed away earlier this year; he refused to believe us until we broke out the Wikipedia), my dad (who is not a Star Wars fan, I think this was the first time he'd seen any of the movies) quizzing the rest of us about character allegiances, shouting at the screen over what a bad actor Hayden Christensen is, discussion about the Star Wars costuming departments, critiques of various actors' post-SW careers, a discussion of Han's badassery on Endor derailed by "I think Leia has AWESOME HAIR", general agreement that That One Ewok Death in ROTJ is the most heartbreaking moment in all the movies, a Cliffs' Notes version of the ending of ROTJ that included Luke and Vader playing catch and Luke refusing to allow Han to marry his sister, constant repetition of the fact that Leia isn't really a princess anymore after Alderaan blows up, a debate over how Leia could remember her mother when Luke couldn't, looking Harrison Ford up on IMDb to find out his height, and, of course, the obligatory shouting at the screen when Luke looks over to see the ghosts of Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin, and THERE'S HAYDEN CHRISTENSEN WTF GEORGE LUCAS YOU SUCK.

It was BIZARRE. But awesome. My family doesn't generally do geek conversations like this!

...I don't have a Star Wars icon and that's sad. :(

Also sad: my internet is working verrrrry sloooowwwwwly.

Not sad: my dad and I went out briefly and got through six-and-a-half tracks on the NBCR of HAiR. Will listen to the rest tomorrow on the way to TEH NIKI'S. YAY NIKI!! <3 <3 <3

Once upon a time there was a [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes post that involved the phrase "We're having hot lesbian sex. And by lesbian sex we mean tea. But it's still hot." This amused a great many people and inspired a great many icons. Teh Niki and I were discussing it, and we were both amused by the phrase, and one or the other of us said, "It's totally about us! Except neither of us drinks tea!" So at some point in this conversation I suggested the substitution of cookies, and she made the icon, and lo, you have our relationship in a nutshell.
Also, the cookies are chocolate chip, if there was any doubt.

There's another story behind this one, and again it's weirdly convoluted. My first solid introduction to online fandom was the official X-Files message board, way back in the day when I was very young. I needed a screenname, thought about it for a while, and finally impulsively decided to name myself after Kristen Kilar, the vampire wannabe Mulder hooks up with in the second-season episode "3". Rather than actually try to register a variant of "KristenKilar" or the like, I called myself chicafrom3. The name stuck, and still does, as you've noticed. This icon's really nothing more or less than a nod to the origins of my screenname -- Mulder and his vampire love interest.

Teh Niki made me get a Twitter account. Apparently all the cool kids are doing it or something? Or maybe I'm just really easy to peer-pressure.

Anyway, yeah, chicafrom3, same as everywhere else. Add me if you want. I'm likely to be just as boring over there as I am here.

Also, I can't get into my Gmail and it's irritating me. :/
