The Kennedy Center is producing Chess with Raúl Esparza as Freddie opposite Karen Olivo as Florence and this is everything I've ever wanted from the Kennedy Center.

I felt the need to share this.

In related news, Karen Olivo released her first studio album to Kickstarter backers and it made me weep.

I'm listening to the demo for A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Murder and oh my God Raul Esparza singing "It's Better With A Man" is my new favorite thing.

Also it's been twenty days since I last posted anything, so, uh. I suck. Total fail. I have no excuse except that I've had nothing to talk about except self-hatred and nobody wants to hear that, so. Sorry. I have also been failing at commenting. Trying to get better. Mid-year resolution?

"Petrified", as sung by Raúl Esparza, from the 2003 Broadway production of Taboo.

Hate the way you look at me
But I can see the terror in your eyes
Your eyes
You pull the trigger
Your smile is sweet
But I don't care if we never meet
That's fine
It's alright

This is the performance that got Raúl Esparza the first of four well-deserved Tony nominations.

Taboo is a show that I've been aware of and owned recordings of for a long time without ever quite paying it much attention. Basically the Raúl connection was enough to get me to try it out, and I liked it well enough and promptly didn't think much about it again. Until late last year, when I suddenly and randomly fell deeply in love, particularly with this song and "Il Adore".

"Petrified" particularly gets me because it comes hard on the heels of a chaotic, high-energy scene -- which is suddenly stripped down to just Philip Sallon (Raúl Esparza) in this very quiet, intimate, heartfelt moment. It's gorgeous and heartwrenching.

I am a bit in love with the Leap Of Faith cast recording.

Is this something I should be ashamed to admit or do the combined powers of Raul Esparza, Kendra Kassebaum, Jessica Phillips, Kecia Lewis Evans, and Leslie Odom, Jr., provide enough legitimacy?

Tony nominations this morning!!!!

If you follow me on Twitter for some reason, you've already seen everything I have to say; if not it's behind the cut.

cut for all the people who don't understand my obsessions )

If you want to see the full nominee list without my rambling commentary, it's here.

I am at the point of giving serious consideration to Very Sketchy Craigslist roommate ads, that is how desperate I am to find a place to live for the summer. :| If you or anyone you know wants to spend the summer in Williamsburg, VA, and is willing to split rent, let me know!

More plausibly, perhaps BGW will get back to me in the next couple days with a possible roommate?

Yeah, last-minute short-term affordable housing, not as easy as you'd think.

8. Sung by your favourite male singer in a musical.

"Being Alive", Company; Raul Esparza is pretty much better than anyone else ever.

I CAN'T FEEL THE LEFT SIDE OF MY FACE

It's very irritating.

So I've been looking up recordings of "I Don't Believe In Heroes Anymore" on YouTube and listening to them. (Okay, mostly I've been listening to Raul's rendition over and over, but I'm pretty sure at this point I've listened to every other rendition on YouTube as well.) I don't know why I'm doing this, but it is taking my mind off the left side of my face SO THERE.

Glee 1x09 Wheels )

Lots of D: this week, but the good kind of D:, y'know? We need more episodes centered on the non-Finn/Rachel/Quinn/Puck bits of Glee Club. ♥

So, the Tonys are tomorrow. Neil Patrick Harris is hosting, so that will be fun, at the very least.

There's only three categories I'm really, really invested in this year -- best book of a musical (HUNTER. obviously.), lead actor in a play (Raúl DAMMIT COME ON YOU GUYS GET ON THE BALL), and featured actress in a musical (Karen!). Best book is [tos]'s only nomination, so I'm double-rooting -- I'm rooting for Hunter because I love him and he deserves it, and I'm rooting for Hunter because [title of show] needs to take a Tony home. Is this Raúl's year? I HOPE SO but given how they keep nominating and then not awarding him I won't actually be surprised if he doesn't win -- disappointed and annoyed, but not surprised. And I just love Karen and want her to have a Tony Award and be happy.

I want HAiR and Next To Normal to take home a nice selection of awards each, but I'm not picky about which ones.

If Shrek or Rock of Ages sweeps the awards I'll never watch or emotionally invest in the Tony Awards again. (This might be a lie.)

New layout, because I am pathologically incapable of keeping one layout for too long. This one's much brighter than the Dr. Horrible layout, anyway, and it has Raul!

Currently seeking out a new mood theme but am very picky about my mood themes. And also very bad at making my own, so that's not gonna happen. I WILL FIND ONE.

Week 2 of [livejournal.com profile] mini_nanowrimo done, and I accomplished my goal of at least 100 words a day. I hate at least half of what I wrote this week, but at least it's writing...

Rundown: "with you/without you" is the second installment in the ongoing Michael/Liam story, started with "kissing liam donnelly" last week; I don't know how I feel about it. It does what I needed it to, anyway. "deathsong" is kind of cool, I like playing with Irish mythology. I'm still not entirely sure what's going on in "big bad world one" -- teh Niki compared it to "Memento" which is fairly accurate as it goes -- and I am also terribly confused as to what the premise of "slipping" actually is. Why do I keep writing things where I don't know what's going on? "interlude #1: liam" is part three in the Michael/Liam story, except it's more an interlude than an actual part of the story, hence the title, and again I don't know how I feel about it. I know for sure that "bibliogeist" isn't finished as is, but I don't know where to go from there, and really the thing I like best about it is the title. (And Shire, the bookstore cat.) "more than anything" is just one cliche from start to finish, isn't it.

So, yeah. I think "deathsong" is the only thing I produced this week that I actually like.

Totally unrelated, I'm starting to seriously think about Christmas shopping. In RL shopping, I have not yet purchased but am fairly sure I know what to get for teh Niki, my dad, and the little brother. I am much more lost on what to get my mom and the older sister. Am I supposed to get something for the new brother-in-law whom I have not yet met? *confused*

In LJ shopping, I have not yet purchased anything for anyone, but I have wishlists bookmarked for [livejournal.com profile] superduperkc, [livejournal.com profile] ladyfiresprite, and [livejournal.com profile] oc_pixie. If you have posted a wishlist and I have somehow missed it, now's the time to let me know; if you haven't but planned to, I'll keep an eye out for it. I'll be putting up a wishlist eventually.

On a lighter note, meme! Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] harbek. Except I was pedantic and replaced all the citations of "play" with "musical" since that's what they're really asking about.

Look at your LJ userpics list. If you have fewer than twenty icons, post them all. If you have between twenty and fifty icons, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five icons, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five icons, pick every tenth one. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly why you have it, why it's interesting to you, and what significance it has.

Company was incredibly awesome. And Raul continues to own my soul. And I cried. And I'm going to rewatch it tomorrow. ♥

But in the meantime:

spoilers for Torchwood 2x07 Dead Man Walking )

In conclusion: MARTHA! And I am now convinced of Jack/Owen's Epic Love. And child actors are always creepy. And MARTHA!
