Today I went to see the second national tour of Once.

cut for length and gushing )

It's almost 9PM, I attended the matinee, I'm still very emotional about this show right now, okay.

Just bought tickets to see Once when the national tour comes near me next spring!

This is the one good thing about the new job, because the tickets were expensive but TOTALLY WORTH IT. For once in my life I am going to be sitting front center orchestra and not way up in the back of the dress circle. For one of my top three favorite shows.

It's months away but I'm SUPER EXCITED NOW.

Has everyone seen this picture? You have? I can't stop staring at it. MATT AND DAVID IN COSTUME TOGETHER *FLAILS EVERYWHERE* WHY DO I NOT HAVE VIDEO YET

... In other Doctor Who related news, the Internet has just informed me that starting tonight Arthur Darvill is playing the Guy in the Broadway production of Once, why is this not information that was given to me sooner (and why is it not being plastered everywhere this is some really weird publicity technique, Once, he may not be Tom Cruise or whoever but HE WILL SELL TICKETS).

In addition to my main Yuletide fic, I also received a Madness treat!! All In Your Hands, another Once fic, this one an absolutely gorgeous and heartbreaking study of the Girl and her reasons for not showing up to see the Guy as she promised she would.

I am experiencing all kinds of flail here ♥♥♥

Merry Christmas!

1) We did a small family gift exchange this morning and will have a small family dinner later today; the rest of the traditional family Christmas celebration is being postponed to early January, when the whole family (including both siblings) can be present. Yay! Gifts received included: The Swell Season on DVD, an Irish/English dictionary, hot chocolate, new boots. Very nice. :D

2) Yuletide fics are up! My gift is here, and it's wonderful; a Once/Doctor Who crossover, wherein the Guy encounters the Doctor after moving to London, and things proceed from there. I'm working my way through the rest of the collection now, but am still filled with glee by this one fic. ♥♥♥ (Also, my recipient responded positively to their gift, so that is also filling me with glee.)

3) Doctor Who. OH DOCTOR WHO. Doctor Who I don't know how this is being numbered: The Snowmen )

▼ First off, new LJ header/theme! I wanted to do an entire new layout, but then couldn't find one I liked, so in the end I stuck with the old one with a new header. But it's there, anyway.

▼ On the job hunting front, I still do not have a job. I do however have an interview on Tuesday, and I unexpectedly had an interview today, so that's something.

▼ My little brother on the other hand has his college graduation this week and then he's flying to California for a job that pays about $100K per year as a starting salary. Not that I'm blindingly jealous or feeling like a failure in comparison or anything...

▼ Apparently I'm doing Camp Nanowrimo this year. I'm not entirely sure why; I don't even have a clear concept in mind, much less a story. All I've got so far is "It might be cool to try to write high fantasy for once", and that's ... virtually nothing. So there may be meltdown posts come June. You've been warned.

▼ I'll put up another 100 Things post sometime tonight.

Tony nominations this morning!!!!

If you follow me on Twitter for some reason, you've already seen everything I have to say; if not it's behind the cut.

cut for all the people who don't understand my obsessions )

If you want to see the full nominee list without my rambling commentary, it's here.

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

I figure this should be a pretty dependable way to get me posting more often, right?

So my chosen subject is 100 Favorite Tracks From Cast Albums! (I'm taking a fairly broad view of the term 'cast album', admittedly, and there will probably be a few tracks from demo and concept albums mixed in with standard cast recordings.) Each entry will include a copy of the track in question + my favorite lyric from the track + ramblings about why I love it. If you like it, buy it. :)

Starting things off on the right foot with the song I haven't been able to quit listening to since I bought this album, "Sleeping" from the Broadway production of Once, as sung by Steve Kazee.

And how am I supposed to live without you?
A wrong word said in anger and you were gone
And how am I supposed to live without anyone?

Total disclosure: I was predisposed to fall in love with this show before it actually existed. The movie Once is one of my favorite films, and I love all the music of Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, The Swell Season, and The Frames. When I heard about the NYTW production, I jumped around the room in glee, and when it moved to Broadway, I cheered.

"Sleeping" is a Swell Season song that was not part of the original movie. I'm fond of the original song, but the Broadway version blew me off my feet. It's haunting, evocative, and perfectly placed in the narrative. Kazee suits it perfectly, particularly on the lines I quoted above. Listen to this song and tell me he doesn't rip your heart out of your chest.

(Tony nominations get announced tomorrow morning. In case anyone had any doubts, I am massively rooting for Once to get nominations in every category it's eligible for. Sadly, score is not included in that -- but if it were, I bet it would win.)

I'm really frustrated by the fact that I continue to have nothing to talk about, but, um, I continue to have nothing to talk about. :| So here's my, what, every-other-week post?

Um. I've started reading The Hunger Games because I need to continue my trend of only picking up popular media well after everyone else in the world. I'm enjoying it so far, so, yay?

The cast recording for Once has officially been released, and it is brilliant, and you should all go listen to and buy it now. I can't stop listening to "Sleeping". It's all just different enough from Glen and Mar's versions to make it Their Own while still being faithful to the source and I love it. I desperately want to get to New York and see this show live. (Um, how many times have you heard me say that about different shows? WELL I MEAN IT about all of them but especially this one do really well on Broadway please Once.)

I've been watching Smash? I don't know if I'd mentioned that before. But I've been watching it, and enjoying it in a cheesy melodrama sort of way. Megan Hilty = ♥, of course. I spend large portions of each episode wondering why I'm supposed to be rooting for Karen, who apparently believes that ensemble work is beneath her and acts completely unprofessional ninety percent of the time. And then there's singing! :D

The new season of Being Human is holding my attention more than I thought it would! Which, you know, I should have expected, since it's Being Human. But my brain was going "NO MITCHELL, NO GEORGE, NO NINA :(" and making sadfaces all over the place and not expecting to be drawn in as much. But I am! Hal and Tom are both lovely and Annie continues to be her fab self. Yay, show, you survived a major cast change few shows would be able to survive.

This feels like an awkward note to end a post on, but I can't think of anything else, so, uh, yes.
