30 Days Of TV:

Day 26 ♥ OMG WTF? Season finale

The Black Donnellys, which was also a series finale, and resulted in a Bolivian Army Ending. What the hell, man. I hate you, NBC.

30 Days Of Who:

Day 19 ♥ The Scene That Made Your Cry the Most

I'm not even a huge Susan fan, but this scene has me in tears every time. The hug and David's earnest proposal and Susan's shock at being locked out and the Doctor's grief at doing it and the freaking shoe. I swear the Doctor still has that freaking shoe somewhere in the TARDIS. And probably has not fixed it yet but keeps telling himself that one day he will.

"Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine."

I have a new iPod!

...she is not actually a new iPod. Actually she is a fairly old frankenPod my brother made out of two different iPods. But she is new to me and that is all that counts.

Also she is 30GB, which is pretty cool.

She has been named Susan for reasons that make perfect sense to me and is currently being filled with music.

Also, the 30 Days TV Meme!

Day 01 ♥ A show that should have never been canceled

*pimps out "The Black Donnellys" some more*

Seriously, a lot of shows (a lot of shows) that I've been in love with over the years have been canceled in their primes, to the point where I eventually suspected that the problem was me and my being a fan meant shows were cursed to die young, but none of those deaths hurts quite as much as TBD. I love my crazy Irish-American brothers, not to mention Joanie (Joanie! ILU, Joanie), Nicky, Kim, Nadine, Kate, Matty, Whitey...and, of course, my boy Joey Ice Cream.

The fact that it ended in a Massive Cliffhanger doesn't make it any better.

I'm pretty sure I'm more bitter over TBD's cancellation than I am about any other premature cancellation I've suffered through.

The Black Donnellys didn't have a TVTropes page and that made me sad so now it does.

I'm sure I've missed stuff.

Meme, continued:
Day 08 ♥ A photo that makes you angry/sad

Photo taken (not by me) at a same-sex marriage demonstration in Boston years ago. If it's not easily readable, his sign says: "The Bible is sacred, not a tool for discrimination."

As a Catholic-identified supporter of civil rights of all kinds (love thy neighbor, yo!) it just makes me really sad that this has to be said, that there are people who will use their religion as an excuse to hate other people.

(Although, the number of signs at that protest identifying their bearers or their bearers' families as Catholic and in favor of gay rights and same-sex marriage warm my heart.)

*flashes peace sign* Make love!

→ The Live At The Greek Theatre DVD is awesome, omg, no lie, trufax. It may have bumped them up the list of "bands I want to see live in concert", and they were already pretty high up there.

→ Today I made brownies. Which are currently cooking.

→ I was going to do laundry, but the washer does not appear to be working.

→ I also worked some more on that asexual!Kevin story I was talking about. I have it mostly written but I can't figure out an ending. Also I don't know if what I already have sucks or not. I keep going back and forth on how I feel about it. I'm not a good impartial judge. But mostly I just really want to find an ending.

→ → ...Regardless of if it sucks or not, regardless of if I finish it or not, I'm glad I've attempted it because it made me go back and rewatch TBD and that reminded me of just how much I love the show and all its characters. <3 ...I am still Not Okay with its cancellation. *sulks*

→ → But you know what the last fic I posted online was? 'sail fair to the far fields of fortune'. Which was almost a year ago. Seriously. I need to finish a fic and post it for my own sanity.

→ ...I'm so behind on Being Human. :/ I need to just sit down and watch the past few episodes. I want to watch them all in one sitting, though, which means I will need more time than I currently possess the ability to set aside. Maybe tomorrow when I am recovering from the trauma of seeing a dentist.

→ Speaking of which, tomorrow I go back to the dentist. Maybe this time they will actually do something to my teeth to justify the huge amounts of money they are charging me. Fingers crossed.

→ Oh, oh! Also, tomorrow is LOST. Maybe that and BH will balance out the huge amount of haaaaaaate and trauma that medical professionals tend to inspire in me.

→ This entry is so disjointed.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (The Black Donnellys - Kevin = love)
Has everyone read this post? It's about the desexualizing of same-sex relationships in fandom and about asexual relationships in fandom and about asexual invisibility in slash (and wider) fandom and many related things and it is very very good and I thumbs-up it. A lot of the comments are excellent as well.

In very much related news, I have an itch to write fic about Kevin Donnelly coming to terms with his own asexuality even if he doesn't have a label for it (because I'm not sure Kevin would have a label for it).

There's a part of me that keeps saying no, I can't do that, it would be entirely too soapboxish and using someone else's character to explore my own thoughts about my own sexuality. On the other hand, that voice says pretty much the same things when I want to make an original character asexual and actually explore that in my original fic, as well. And you know what? I want asexual characters, and I want fic about asexual characters, and nobody's going to just hand that to me...the best place to start is by writing some myself, right?

To complicate matters more, actually writing that fic would probably necessitate a canon rewatch and also I'm not in a great writing space right now...aside from a couple hundred words of Better Than It Sounds every few days, I'm not really writing anything worthwhile right now. And it's up for debate if Better Than It Sounds is worthwhile anyway. ;)

...I swear tomorrow I will post things that have like squee and whatever in it.

Once upon a time there was a [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes post that involved the phrase "We're having hot lesbian sex. And by lesbian sex we mean tea. But it's still hot." This amused a great many people and inspired a great many icons. Teh Niki and I were discussing it, and we were both amused by the phrase, and one or the other of us said, "It's totally about us! Except neither of us drinks tea!" So at some point in this conversation I suggested the substitution of cookies, and she made the icon, and lo, you have our relationship in a nutshell.
Also, the cookies are chocolate chip, if there was any doubt.

There's another story behind this one, and again it's weirdly convoluted. My first solid introduction to online fandom was the official X-Files message board, way back in the day when I was very young. I needed a screenname, thought about it for a while, and finally impulsively decided to name myself after Kristen Kilar, the vampire wannabe Mulder hooks up with in the second-season episode "3". Rather than actually try to register a variant of "KristenKilar" or the like, I called myself chicafrom3. The name stuck, and still does, as you've noticed. This icon's really nothing more or less than a nod to the origins of my screenname -- Mulder and his vampire love interest.

- I swear I am still working through the alphabet prompts.

- So, Prince Jack is in Chicago and has met two people so far. Well, a girl and a cat. I'm very excited about this, I hope it goes well. For me, not necessarily for him.

- Also, my flist has been inundated by April Fools pranks. LJ's [livejournal.com profile] news prank was lame. [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes had a decent one. I enjoyed [livejournal.com profile] bwaydaily's Tony Award For Perfect Attendance article, that was funny.

- Also also, Tom Guiry is going to be on Kings! That makes two Donnelly brothers showing up so far. If we can get Billy Lush and Jonathan Tucker on as well, it's practically a reunion. Not really. Okay, I just really want Billy Lush to show up on this show. If Keith Nobbs wants to show up, too, I won't complain.

- LOST tonight!

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] fandoms_end is open for claiming! Go, claim, write. Someone claimed The Dresden Files bookverse which I'm excited about. I claimed The Black Donnellys 'cause I'm nuts. Well, no, I claimed TBD because I'm on a kick right now and because it offers me a built-in framing device to excuse continuity errors. I still have to figure out what the actual timeline of TSE/JE is, what happens when, that sort of thing, because every time I rewatch those episodes I just get completely confused as to when any given event is happening.

Also, I really want to go see Coraline.

Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so others can play along.

[livejournal.com profile] morgeil asked me about:

speculative fiction -- or, in other words, science fiction, fantasy, alternate histories, horror, superhero fiction, and all that other awesome stuff. The kind of fiction that asks "what if?" I've always been fascinated by this, in a way I tend to sum up as "I'd like some escapism in my escapism pls" although that doesn't do the full awesomeness of the genre any justice at all.

chess -- the musical, not the game. Not that I don't like the game, I do, although I'm not very good at it. But no, I love the musical much more. It's my favorite musical, I collect it obsessively, I'm in love with all the characters and the music and the utterly cractastick nature of the seventeen million different scripts. (Sydney Chess? CRACKIEST THING EVER.)

catholicism -- I was raised Catholic, I went to a Catholic college, I still identify as Catholic even though I kind of fail at the going-to-mass thing and don't actually recall when I last went to confession. I'm very interested in the history of the Church and doctrine and the way things have changed and how spirituality and religion differ from each other.

crack pairings -- a good portion of my fannish love comes from shipping pairings that make no logical sense, the "you'd have to be on crack to see it" kind of pairings. Like Michael/Shannon (LOST). Or Ignatius/Maru (Andromeda). Or Babs/Martha/Tosh (Doctor Who). Or Kevin/cereal/sandwich/jacket (Black Donnellys). I could go on for a while but I'll shut up. I do, in point of fact, ship based on personalities and possibility as much as chemistry, so it's very easy for me to go from "these two characters have such and such in common" or "huh, you know, this canon relationship could be seen as a parallel for this other totally untouched-upon and cracky pairing" or "hi, awesome and hot characters who are not appreciated enough" or "wow, he has amazing chemistry with inanimate objects" to "OMGLOVESHIPPINGTHISNOW".

theme parks -- I work for one. Yes, it's just that simple.

nipple erectors -- notable for being Shane MacGowan's first band (and we all know how I love my Shaney Mac) as well as having the hit single "Gabrielle" and only one officially-released album. They recently had a reunion concert with Shane! I wish I'd been there. :(

bad movies -- the campier and worse the writing and special effects, the better. This specifically refers to the sci-fi/horror/Bruce Campbell end of the spectrum although I can on occasion be persuaded to particularly bad examples of other genres. Fun on both the "point and mock" level and the "I could do this better!" level. And usually full of comedy gold.

And another meme from a few different folks on my flist:

Name any character from any of my fandoms and I'll tell you...

(a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon
(b) a reason he/she sucks
(c) a reason he/she is awesome
(d) five things that never happened to that character and/or
(e) five people that character never fell in love with and why

STILL ALIVE!

I know I have been HORRIBLY AWOL. But in addition to the wireless problems -- which I'd quite like to solve, so if anyone knows of an Internet service that won't demand a long-term commitment 'cause I can't commit to more than a couple months, LET ME KNOW -- my laptop also DIED a month ago and I just got it back fixed today. *hugs it* Loooooove you, working laptop. Which is not preventing me from price-shopping newer models and planning to buy one later this summer when I have solid money.

I have missed EVERYTHING so tell me, tell me, tell me what's been going on. I'm going to try and get caught up on comments but there's 200+ new messages in my Yahoo! account, 25 new in my Gmail account, and 54 new in my LJ inbox. *flails* So help me out here.

Love you guys, love my job, and if anybody's planning to be in the Williamsburg Virginia area this summer, let me know, I can get you discounted tickets to Anehuser-Busch parks and we could maybe meet up on my time off?

In RL news, my job is pretty much awesome -- the cast is very very pretty and have brilliant Irish accents *is shallow* and they're very funny and weird and crazy. And my fellow crew are also insane and brilliant and cool and we've had discussions hinging on the Zombie Survival Guide, Douglas Adams, Roger Zelazny, the Black Donnellys, and much much more. I don't want to work theme parks for a living for the rest of my life but for a summer job it's very, very cool.

Family things going on that I'm not quite ready to talk about here, but when I am, I promise, y'all will be let in the loop. I love you guys.

I talked to Evan up at Regis a week ago or so and I miss those guys terribly. It sounds like they miss me too. Hey, Regis folk, was Pippin as much of a train wreck as Evan made it sound like?

In fannish news the only show I'm currently caught up on is LOST, and my reactions can be summed as follows: possibly spoilerish ) *is possibly somewhat predictable, ys*

Talk to me, guys. I've been cut off for a month and it's killing me.
