I am rewatching The Chase today because I'm off work and why not, and here are some things that are sadly underappreciated:

cut for length )

Also, something that isn't technically unappreciated but should still get more attention:
- Barbara and Ian's montage of ridiculous photographs upon arriving back in London <3 Not to mention "What's two years amongst friends?" and "Where've you been, on the moon?" "Er, no, but you're getting warm!"
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: dw: amy)
Ohay, first major writer's block of this year's NaNo. Ugh. I've written about three hundred words today which is shameful and I have no idea where to go from here. Mila and Nalini are chilling in Luke's office waiting for him to return while they eat junk food and discuss what they would do if they were rich. POSSIBLY if I could work out an actual plan for how Mila and Nalini are going to bring down the corrupt systems I could actually move forward in the ~plot. Such as it is. Since right now it mostly consists of "Okay, we have talked to Person A, now let us go talk to Person B!"

On the plus side, I have managed to get Fitz to introduce himself, so. That's something.

OH! Have all the DW fans on my flist seen the awesome unreleased scenes from the S5 box set? spoiler for the second of the linked scenes )

You know, LJ, this whole extremely-delayed-notifs thing is a pain in the ass. Fix it, pls and thank you.

30 Days Of TV:

Day 28 ♥ First TV show obsession

The X-Files.

There were other shows, before The X-Files, that I enjoyed, that I made a point of watching, whatever. Ghostwriter, for example, probably has a decent claim to being my first TV obsession. But if we're being honest here, it's The X-Files. This started in...middle school? Probably? and continued until the last season, at which point I quit watching because it was so far away from the show I loved.

TXF was the first to get me seriously into online fandom and fic and everything else that goes with it. The XF RPT remains one of my favorite memories of fandom. This is the point at which I picked up my username, a username that has persisted to this day despite occasional thoughts that I should change it to something less specific-fandom related; I always wind up concluding that I've just got too much history invested in this name to change it.

Mulder and Scully were my heroes back in the day, yo. And I desperately wanted to be one of The Lone Gunmen.

30 Days Of Who:

Day 21 ♥ Your Doctor Who OTP

Strictly speaking, I don't have a Who OTP. There is no couple I love together enough not to ship them with other people as well.

That said, the closest I have to a Who OTP has to be Barbara/Ian.

(Because, you see, with Barbara and Ian I can totally ship them with other people, but at the end of the day I have to believe that they wind up together. Possibly in an open relationship, but together.)

Also, if you need proof that they were totes ~doing it~, just watch "The Romans". For serious.

Tonight's meme responses are going to be quick and sloppy 'cause...I'm really low-energy tonight. :|

30 Days Of TV:

Day 15 ♥ Favorite female character

Miss Barbara Wright, history teacher extraordinaire, from Doctor Who. See three or four entries back for my spiel on why she is the most awesome awesome to ever awesome.

Runners up: Claire Littleton (LOST), Beka Valentine (Andromeda), Adelle DeWitt (Dollhouse)

Day 08 ♥ A Who-Related Photo That Makes You Happy

Oh, William Hartnell, how so awesome.

...apparently I am in a major Old Skool mood recently.

My brother decided that I needed to learn how to use Ubuntu so he installed it so I could dual-boot it.

Running it caused my computer to shut off.

Twice.

After the second time, trying to restart my computer resulted in a loop where it would get to a certain point in the startup sequence and then go back to the beginning.

We shut down for a while, until the processor had cooled some, and then were allowed to startup in Windows and uninstall Ubuntu.

But then my Internet wouldn't connect.

Some time later, we discovered that my brother had accidentally hit the wireless switch and turned off my card. :|

WAY TO FREAK ME OUT, SALLY.

Anyway, all problems have been fixed now, but I'm thinking it's going to be a while longer before I try to learn Linux again. OR MAYBE I will just steal my brother's computer and learn it on his and let Sally stay safe just running Windows.

30 Days Of TV Meme:

Day 12 ♥ An episode you’ve watched more than 5 times

There's a lot of possible answers to that. *should probably be ashamed of her TV rewatching habit*

However, I'm going to offer up a M*A*S*H episode. Because I watched it today.

Specifically, the M*A*S*H episode "A Night At Rosie's".

This might be my favorite M*A*S*H episode. And that's saying a good bit, because I grew up on M*A*S*H, my dad owned 90% of the series on VHS tapes (I'm still trying to transition his collection into DVDs, which will take up much less space). But "A Night At Rosie's" ranks, if not first, then in the top 5.

It's the episode where Hawkeye and BJ decide, in a fit of drunkenness, to secede from the union to get out of the war. And then they get most of the camp in on it. And it's fantastic.

30 Days Of Who Meme:

Day 05 ♥ Your Favorite Companion

This is another one of those where if you're surprised by the answer you haven't been paying very close attention.

I firmly believe that sometimes, to this day, the Doctor stops and asks himself, "What Would Barbara Wright Do?"

She's kickass, tough, compassionate, handles things that would wreck most people, calls the Doctor out... She runs over Daleks with a truck. She impersonates an Aztec goddess and pulls it off through sheer attitude. She bluffs the hell out of the Dalek overlords with her leet history skillz and a mishmash of every historical reference she happens to think of. She stalks a student to a junkyard because she's worried (and madly curious!). She wears cardigans and sensible shoes.

She cares about people even when it's not the most sensible thing to do. Even when she knows better.

And quite honestly the first two seasons of the show are really "The Barbara Wright Show", with supporting characters The Mentor (The Doctor), The Love Interest (Ian), and The Student (Susan).

(Runners-up: Martha, Amy, Mickey, Romana, Peri, Liz. Listed in no particular order.)

30 Days of TV meme:

Day 09 ♥ Best scene ever

...This is a difficult one.

However, I give you:

The phone call.

Yeah, you know what phone call I'm talking about.

There is literally nothing about this scene I would change ever. The direction, the lighting, the music, even the sets and costume -- the production values are perfect. And the WRITING is...well, it's exactly why this sort of phone call would be, let's be honest. And Henry Ian Cusick and Sonya Walger prove why the love story they helped create is so incredibly resonant.

It may not be The Best Scene Ever but it's certainly on the shortlist.

30 Days Of Who meme:

Day 02 ♥ Your Favorite Classic Series Episode

I am going to assume that 'episode' means 'serial'. Just 'cause.

I have many favorite serials, but if it comes down to one, "Edge of Destruction" wins. It features Barbara being kickass (but then, she so rarely isn't); Susan is startlingly creepy in it; One is downright terrifying in his insistence that it's Barbara and Ian's fault; it does fascinating things with the show's format and the TARDIS herself that has not been tried again; and it's a bottle episode that revels in its...bottle-ness. Is there a term for that?

I mean...

How dare you! Do you realise, you stupid old man, that you'd have died in the Cave of Skulls if Ian hadn't made fire for you? And what about what we went through against the Daleks? Not just for us, but for you and Susan too, and all because you tricked us into going down to the city. Accuse us? You ought to go down on your hands and knees and thank us! Gratitude’s the last thing you’ll ever have, or any sort of common sense either.

If you've ever wondered why people insist that the Doctor would not be the Doctor we know and love today were it not for Barbara Wright, wonder no more.

4. This will - allegedly - create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Once upon a time there was a [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes post that involved the phrase "We're having hot lesbian sex. And by lesbian sex we mean tea. But it's still hot." This amused a great many people and inspired a great many icons. Teh Niki and I were discussing it, and we were both amused by the phrase, and one or the other of us said, "It's totally about us! Except neither of us drinks tea!" So at some point in this conversation I suggested the substitution of cookies, and she made the icon, and lo, you have our relationship in a nutshell.
Also, the cookies are chocolate chip, if there was any doubt.

There's another story behind this one, and again it's weirdly convoluted. My first solid introduction to online fandom was the official X-Files message board, way back in the day when I was very young. I needed a screenname, thought about it for a while, and finally impulsively decided to name myself after Kristen Kilar, the vampire wannabe Mulder hooks up with in the second-season episode "3". Rather than actually try to register a variant of "KristenKilar" or the like, I called myself chicafrom3. The name stuck, and still does, as you've noticed. This icon's really nothing more or less than a nod to the origins of my screenname -- Mulder and his vampire love interest.

Put your MP3 player/playlist on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.

When You Were Young

Someday I'm gonna be famous
If you live around here
Break of day, the dawn is here
My eyes are fully open to my awful situation

I can't feel nothin' at all
Hey, Stephen, I know looks can be deceivin'
In passing glances
Whenever I see someone less fortunate than I

Each night you show up about a quarter to two
This step is one again our first
I solve my problems and I see the light
Hey ho, let's go

She's not a girl who misses much
A young cowboy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm
How glad the many millions of Annabelles and Lillians
Let me set you straight

How the world can change
Little shop
Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
They came from near, they came from far

Comment on this post. I will choose seven interests from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so others can play along.

[livejournal.com profile] morgeil asked me about:

speculative fiction -- or, in other words, science fiction, fantasy, alternate histories, horror, superhero fiction, and all that other awesome stuff. The kind of fiction that asks "what if?" I've always been fascinated by this, in a way I tend to sum up as "I'd like some escapism in my escapism pls" although that doesn't do the full awesomeness of the genre any justice at all.

chess -- the musical, not the game. Not that I don't like the game, I do, although I'm not very good at it. But no, I love the musical much more. It's my favorite musical, I collect it obsessively, I'm in love with all the characters and the music and the utterly cractastick nature of the seventeen million different scripts. (Sydney Chess? CRACKIEST THING EVER.)

catholicism -- I was raised Catholic, I went to a Catholic college, I still identify as Catholic even though I kind of fail at the going-to-mass thing and don't actually recall when I last went to confession. I'm very interested in the history of the Church and doctrine and the way things have changed and how spirituality and religion differ from each other.

crack pairings -- a good portion of my fannish love comes from shipping pairings that make no logical sense, the "you'd have to be on crack to see it" kind of pairings. Like Michael/Shannon (LOST). Or Ignatius/Maru (Andromeda). Or Babs/Martha/Tosh (Doctor Who). Or Kevin/cereal/sandwich/jacket (Black Donnellys). I could go on for a while but I'll shut up. I do, in point of fact, ship based on personalities and possibility as much as chemistry, so it's very easy for me to go from "these two characters have such and such in common" or "huh, you know, this canon relationship could be seen as a parallel for this other totally untouched-upon and cracky pairing" or "hi, awesome and hot characters who are not appreciated enough" or "wow, he has amazing chemistry with inanimate objects" to "OMGLOVESHIPPINGTHISNOW".

theme parks -- I work for one. Yes, it's just that simple.

nipple erectors -- notable for being Shane MacGowan's first band (and we all know how I love my Shaney Mac) as well as having the hit single "Gabrielle" and only one officially-released album. They recently had a reunion concert with Shane! I wish I'd been there. :(

bad movies -- the campier and worse the writing and special effects, the better. This specifically refers to the sci-fi/horror/Bruce Campbell end of the spectrum although I can on occasion be persuaded to particularly bad examples of other genres. Fun on both the "point and mock" level and the "I could do this better!" level. And usually full of comedy gold.

And another meme from a few different folks on my flist:

Name any character from any of my fandoms and I'll tell you...

(a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon
(b) a reason he/she sucks
(c) a reason he/she is awesome
(d) five things that never happened to that character and/or
(e) five people that character never fell in love with and why
