Now on to the good stuff: last night's Torchwood episodes! And tons of capslock abuse!


MISS MARTHA JONES!

I finally managed to watch both episodes, and now my Martha glee threatens to make me forget everything I wanted to say about them, but I'll try, k?

I'm...not feeling love for the Jack-backstory parts of the episode. I know it's been said before, but the point stands: Luke Skywalker on Tatooine? Really? And I wish they'd taken a clue from fandom (since the show takes everything else from fandom lulz) and at least indicated Jack came from some kind of family structure other than mother-father-two-kids. Group marriage maybe? Or just...some kind of suggestion that pairings other than male/female marriage were around. I know, I know, they didn't say they weren't around, but since the only family structure we saw was Jack's and it was recognizable as the traditional twentieth century and prior structure, it bothered me and I can't articulate it.

On the other hand, I am glad that they didn't arbitrarily assign Jack a "real" name, because that would have bothered me a lot more. And is it just me, or did this episode lend support to the idea that Jack doesn't actually remember his original name?

Tosh has the WORST LOVELIFE EVER OMG. And Adam? Mindfucking her into a relationship is NOT ON. NO. BAD ADAM.

...but my Jack/Tosh shipping heart went "glee" when she was all "I know I'm special, I'm just waiting for someone to see it" and he said "I SEE IT" and AWWWWWWWW. *glees*

I am shipping Gwen/Rhys based mainly on the power of Rhys's awesome. And his love for her. 'Cause when she pulls that stupid "I love Rhys but not like I love Jack!!" bit I kind of want to smack her, but he loves her enough that I can (grudgingly) forgive her for it. And Gwen/Rhys backstory is CUTE and the GIGGLING AT THE STORE when he goes off on a rant and I LOVE THEM TOGETHER OKAY? NOW I KIND OF WANT THEM TO GET MARRIED AND BE HAPPY EVER AFTER IF SHE STOP OGLING OTHER GUYS AND GIRLS.

It's weird, generally when I adore a character I want to ship them with someone else I adore, but I just, I can't not ship Rhys with Gwen because he loves her so much. Although note this doesn't actually prevent me from shipping Rhys/Jack and Rhys/Tosh and Rhys/Mickey as well.

As much as I dislike the purported Jack!backstory which I am now denying as an invention of Adam's, that last memory, the one Adam inserted himself into? Breaks my heart. The bit where Adam inserts himself, and Jack's dad gets mad and walks away with Grey, and Jack's left behind yelling, "What? This isn't how it happened! Dad, I love you! Dad! Grey! Dad!" And it made me upset even if I refuse to accept it as real.

Geek!Owen is actually adorable. And I can't believe I just wrote those words about OWEN. But then he lost all those points again when he made that dig at Toshi at the end of the episode. ANGSTY BACKSTORY DOES NOT EXCUSE, DAMMIT.

I AM KIND OF SHIPPING JACK/IANTO. Angsty!serial-killer!Ianto kind of won me over. And Jack's total refusal to believe that Ianto could be a murder. Mostly I think it was the lighting in the lie-detector scene because OMG so pretty and they both looked so pretty in that light. Don't judge me for my shipping reasons, I don't judge you. Okay, I probably do, but NOT OUT LOUD or in public!

MISS MARTHA JONES! *glees more* She's SO PRETTY. And BRILLIANT. And AMAZINGLY AWESOME.

Seriously. EVEN HER WHITE BLOOD CELLS ARE MORE AWESOME THAN YOU.

The Doctor got her a job with UNIT because he owed her for saving the world. *more glee* And she's dating Tom! I liked him a lot, so I'm glad.

Tosh thinks she's beautiful. *glees and clings to crackship*

"I see you're still trying to get over your shyness, Jack."

I loved Gwen assuming they'd slept together, Martha correcting her, and then getting all giggly over the fact that they're the only two people in the world Jack hasn't shagged.

Owen's total inability to get the whatever-scalpel-thing working! *glees* He's trying to impress Martha and instead he almost makes Ianto a casualty! I know, I know, the things was a plot point, but all the times he failed to make it work properly just made me *glee*.

Martha quizzing Ianto about Jack in bed. *glees more* "Innovative." "Really?" "Bordering on the avant-garde."

Tosh and Ianto! "I found a way in, what do you think?" "You are warped on the inside. How do you come up with these things?" "I'll take that as a compliment."

I still don't really like Owen, but I've definitely got to give props to Burn 'cause he's brilliant at his job.

The mayflys made me sad. I felt sorry for them, dammit. The whole episode I was being reminded of that X-Files episode "Brand X" with the tobacco beetles, and then Torchwood turned around and MADE ME FEEL SORRY for the creepy little things.

I was totally spoiled for Owen's death and can't actually talk about how I feel about it right now because I'm not sure. No really, I'm not, I spent a lot of energy disliking him for his treatment of Tosh and the date-rape drug in S1, and then I just watched Geek!Owen for an episode and then he was cute with Martha and then he accepted Tosh's date invitation and then he died and I don't know how I feel, okay? But what I can say is that it was gorgeously shot. That final shot, the overhead one with everybody dressed in black except Owen in a white shirt getting rapidly stained with blood, and then the dead doctor in the white lab coat, and it was just beautiful cinematography.

OMG YAY.

No seriously. Um. I love the lighting design on this show. Have I mentioned that to death yet? Because I seriously do. It's gorgeous and very effective. Who's the cinematographer? *checks* IMDB says Mark Waters, Ray Orton, and Simon Butcher all did cinematography for episodes of Torchwood and isn't up-to-date yet on which one(s) did "Adam" and "Reset". Whoever it was (or whoever they were), BRILLIANT job. Gorgeous lights.

Also some brilliant shots, so props to the directors as well.

Tosh continues to be too incredibly gorgeous and brilliant and amazing for words. Whhhhy does no one appreciate her properly?

I want Tosh's wardrobe. And Martha's. Both. I want free run of their closets.

Let me rant about the Jack backstory first. There was much disapointment in the standard package family unit, I really did expect Jack to have two Dad's or two Mum's or both! Honestly shocked at him having normal parents!

I'm choosing to believe that it was all a badly-planned invention of Adam's, and that Jack's real backstory involves a nontraditional family unit. For some reason I have my heart set on a triad marriage, although the exact combination of genders involved eludes me. But anyway that's what I'm choosing to believe.

I've thought for a while that Jack might have erased his own memories, but just didn't remember doing it. A very Adam-esque situation, actually, and I'm kind of surprised the episode didn't do anything with that; Jack wakes up without two days of his memory and doesn't freak out about his missing two years? It was a bit odd.

Its disturbing because there has been no public denial off it. The Sun ran and article called 'Russ the Racist' last year and netiher RTD nor the BBC made no attempt to quash the article, that is weird because while its a shitnewspaperthatpublishesnothingbutjunk, The Sun is read by 70% of England.

The thought has crossed my mind that Torchwoods writers have simply forgotten about the two years of memory thing. There was supposed to be a direct answer in season one of TW, but it never happened.

O_O ;) Kinda makes me wonder now if Jack's been making up the whole "Oh EVERYBODY's omnisexual in my time. Yep. Is trufax" all along... ;) Nah, seriously, I'd like to think that that was Adam's influence, since Jack really doesn't know, so he wouldn't know if it was wrong.

I, too, was spoiled about Owen. He's still not my favorite for the reasons you mentioned already but I've been warming to him a bit more this season. Though every time he dis's my girl Tosh I wanna smack the back of his head as hard as I can. Grrrr. However, I didn't particularly want him shot dead, you know? (And I agree about the lighting and composition of that shot! Even I noticed how great it was and I'm Captain Oblivious to most things like that! ;) )

After however-many years in fandom shipping things that conflict like crazy -- after adopting my screen name in honor of somebody who conflicted with my main ship in that fandom -- it just confuses me that people hate on characters for no reason past "they're in the way of my OTP!!!1!"
