Random Doctor Who thoughts/beliefs/bits of personal canon! Lots of stuff about sexuality and romance contained within.
-I believe in an asexual Doctor. However, from what I've seen of most fans who believe in an asexual Doctor, I think mine varies a little -- I don't think he's aromantic, I don't think he's never had sex, and I don't think asexuality was the default for Gallifreyans. I think he and Susan's grandmother had an active and healthy sex life, but she was always the aggressor; if she didn't initiate sex, it simply wouldn't occur to him to do it. He's slept with other people since, but only when they made it really really clear that that's what they were looking for. I'm talking along the lines of "Doctor, I want to shag you." "Oh! Well. Okay then."
-One of the reasons Romana ditched him was because she was sick of not being able to get him to initiate sex; even though he freely admitted he enjoyed sleeping with her, he just never thought of it on his own.
-Romana later went on to have an active and healthy sex life with Leela, who was perfectly happy to initiate often enough to keep things unpredictable for both of them.
-This is one of the reasons why the Master spends so much time pissed at the Doctor. Because he never picked up on all the sexual tension dating all the way back to their academy days. It is not the only reason why they feud, but the implicit rejection is in the very back of the Master's mind and fuels his anger a little more.
-This is also one of (but not the only!) reason he never slept with Rose, and yes, I believe he never slept with Rose; she was waiting for him to start things in that direction, and it honestly never occurred to him that that's what she wanted. I don't know whether he would have reciprocated had she tried, but the fact that I see Rose as a pretty blatant Susan-substitute colors my thinking and I'm aware of that.
-If there was a One True Love of the Doctor's life, it was Susan's grandmother.
-That said, there wasn't a One True Love of the Doctor's life.
-He loved and adored all his companions equally but uniquely. Way back,
ionlylurkhere wrote a fic called "First Times" which contained the following line:
And, yes, this. Exactly.
-This holds true for whether his companion is someone he's in love with (Romana), someone he's Best Friends Ever with (Sarah Jane, Donna), someone he's a little in awe of even if he won't admit it because he's stubborn like that (Babs, Liz, Martha), someone he pretends to barely tolerate (Ian, Harry, Mickey...poor guys), or someone he sees as a substitute for his missing family (Susan, but she's not a substitute; Vicki, Katarina, Adric,Rose). Romantic love does not pwn familial love does not pwn platonic love. You can't rank the people you love like that, and I highly doubt the Doctor would even think of doing so.
-That said, I'm willing to admit he had at least a little romantic love for all of his companions bar Susan herself. But that's mostly so I can pretend my Doctor/Babs/Ian ship is at all viable.
-I know I get annoyed over the way the Doctor treated Mickey (particularly Nine with his constant "Ricky the Idiot" talk), but it is Completely Consistent with his history, dating back to how he treated Ian. Ian is lovely and wonderful and appropriately-action-hero and knows how to do things he has no logical reason to know and saves the world almost as many times as the star of the show (Babs, obv), but One gets his name wrong all the time ("Chesterfield", most memorably). I haven't watched any of the Four/SJS/Harry arcs recently (because I fail as a fangirl?) and can't remember if Four ever calls Harry by the wrong name, but I do remember he treats Harry like an idiot an awful lot. Harry sometimes acts like an idiot for plot purposes but clearly isn't. Obviously the Doctor has problems with awesome guys stealing his spotlight. Or he just gets Harry and Mickey mixed up with Ian in his mind. He is pretty old by now, after all.
-The Doctor lies. A lot. To everyone. Including himself.
-Jack Harkness is most emphatically Not the Face of Boe. Also, much like the Doctor and more in keeping with this post, Jack loves all the people he loves uniquely and equally, only with much more sexuality. Yes, this means Ianto Jones is not a special and unique flower, except inasmuch as everyone is.
-That said, I think Jack's much better at monogamy than people give him credit for. I don't think he'd commit to one person for the Rest Of His Life, no, but I do think he's perfectly capable of committing to one person for the extent of their relationship, if that's what that one person wants. (Estelle? That was totally a monogamous relationship until they went their separate ways. John Hart? Not a chance.)
-I don't think that's what Ianto wants, and therefore theirs is not a particularly monogamous relationship, and neither of them cares.
-Barbara Wright is More Awesome Than You. Trufax.
