Alphas has been canceled.

I'm not particularly surprised, given how long they dragged out announcing a decision, but I am incredibly disappointed. Particularly since this means Alphas now has to join The Black Donnellys, Kings, and Pushing Daisies as "shows cancelled with horrible cliffhanger endings", which is always unfair.

I hope the cast and crew go on to find great work, because they all deserve it.

So I've been pretty terrible about updating my LJ. I'm sorry. I blame Camp NaNo. (Also, deciding to do three incarnations of NaNoWriMo in one year was ... not the smartest decision I ever made.) On the plus side, I hit 50K on Better Than It Sounds tonight, so maybe I'll be able to pay more attention to my LJ now!

(Better Than It Sounds, despite having hit 50K, has not reached the end. I don't actually feel that bad about it this time because I'm not sure the BTIS 'verse has a definite ending point.)

Anyway, other things that are going on:

* It looks like SyFy is picking up Continuum for an early 2013 airing. Woo! So Americans who haven't seen it yet you will have no more excuses I expect you to watch the awesome time-travelling-cop show. Lexa Doig plays a terrorist, if you need encouragement.

* In continued Andromeda alumnae news, Lisa Ryder is going to guest star on Alphas, hell yeah! So excited. I continue to love Alphas more and more with each episode. (And continue to wish they could get Summer Glau on as a regular that would be awesome.)

* Probably everybody already knows about this, but just in case: BBC is posting "Pond Life" minisodes online as a teaser leading into Asylum Of The Daleks (only four days away omg omg omg) and they're adorable. I will pretty much never get over Eleven laying down some backing vocals. That is a thing that exists in the world.

* No link for this one, but Once Upon A Time promos have started airing! So excited for Emilie as a regular + Mulan, Aurora, Captain Hook, and ... um, everybody they've announced, really, but those are the three that have me REALLY REALLY EXCITED. Although Emilie as a series regular beats it all. EMILIE AS A SERIES REGULAR.

* I swear there was other stuff I wanted to talk about but I don't remember what any of it was. :/

Thoughts on summer TV I'm watching:

Bunheads is not a particularly good show and it has plotholes you could fly a 747 through, but it's got Sutton Foster and ballet and I'm really shipping Boo/Sasha (at the very least Sasha has a massive crush on Boo and no idea how to deal with it), so I'm sticking with it. Also this week had They Might Be Giants and a dig at 50 Shades Of Grey, and those are never bad things.

Continuum continues to be fantastic and everyone should be watching it. The ways the writers use (and screw up!) Kiera's future tech is fascinating. Alec is one of my favorite TV geniuses. And I cannot say enough about how much I love the moral greyness of this show. Everyone is of questionable morality, the 'bad guys' are mostly bad due to their methods but they got there in understandable ways and the 'good guys' also used morally dubious methods and UGH I LOVE IT SO MUCH. IT SHOULD BE PICKED UP BY A NETWORK IN EVERY COUNTRY AND WATCHED BY EVERYONE.

Political Animals I am mainly watching Because Sigourney Weaver And Sebastian Stan. That's not a complaint. TJ sometimes gets very close to Prince Jack for me, but Sebastian Stan does it so well I still can't complain.

Alphas is back! My relationship to this show is kind of weird for me because I basically forgot it existed while it was on hiatus and then it came back and I suddenly remembered how much I love it. I have some minor issues with the reset button being played so quickly, but whatever I still love it dearly. Especially the hug scene at the end of the episode. That scene right there encapsulated pretty much everything I love about this show.

I have nothing non-TV related to talk about, so here's quick thoughts on all the shows I just got caught up on:

Doctor Who: Closing Time
cut for spoilers )

Alphas: The Unusual Suspects & Original Sin
cut for spoilers )

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: The Return of Harmony - Part 2
cut for spoilers )

And now I'm wasting time watching the Hitchhikers' Guide To The Galaxy TV series. Yeah. :D
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: mlp: fluttershy)
Wow, today was a weird TV day.

First I started by catching up with this past week's Alphas, "Blind Spot". You being gone and you being different is the same thing. )

Then I switched gears and watched the first episode of the second season of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Don't judge me! Oh, no! I'm very glad my friends want me to be the best that I can be. )

And then I switched gears one more time and watched today's Doctor Who, The God Complex. She'll say that we can't accept it because it's too extravagant and we'll always feel a crippling sense of obligation. It's a risk I'm willing to take. )

So yeah ... kind of a weird and inconsistent day, TV-watching-wise.

This week's Alphas: AWESOME. So basically Summer Glau needs to be in EVERY SHOW EVER playing a crazy brilliant girl. Other high points: development of Bill's relationship with his wife (and the fact that he's worried about any kid of his possibly being an Alpha is fascinating); Rachel being extremely clever about using her abilities to her advantage; Gary's act of rebellion and then successfully tracking down Nina and Skylar ("it has to be purple"); Nina being protective of Skylar even though she says they're not friends (and the Nina/Skylar road trip ♥♥♥); Dr. Rosen's final moment of ethics. EVERYBODY GOT THEIR CHANCE TO SHINE. IT WAS AWESOME. Favorite episode so far!

Dresden Files: Finished reading Ghost Story and all I can really say is WTF. It makes sense now but I'm still reeling over all those developments and revelations. WTF, JIM BUTCHER. WTF. But Fitz and Daniel can be regulars now, right? *hopeful* ...I kind of fell in love with them both over the course of the book, which on the bright side distracted me from the TOTAL LACK of any actual Ramirez appearances.

The Pretender: Finished season one! It's official, I'm addicted. Somewhere around episode nineteen I realized that I had at some point fallen in love with Miss Parker. You're awesome, Miss Parker. Not totally sold on the mythology/world building yet, but completely and utterly sold on the characters, so I'm in for the long haul.

On Saturday I will officially be a quarter of a century old. How did that happen? I'm not okay with this.

My parents and the little brother will be coming up to see me for my birthday, so that's nice. We're planning to do a day trip to Busch Gardens since none of them have had a chance to hit the park this summer and I have comp tickets for them. Hopefully I'll be able to divorce my brain from "this is where I work" and have fun. Hit up some rides, wooo. It'll be good to spend time with my family.

Quick fandom updates:

- This week's Alphas was AMAZING. Eventually I might get sick of gushing about this show but right now I'm riding the new-fandom buzz. I want Bill and Gary to be awkward and terrible partners for ALWAYS. I'm less enthused about the Nina/Cameron hookup, but it has potential to not be mind-numbingly dull.
I want Alphas icons. :(

- I finally got hold of the new Dresden Files and am 18 chapters in. And seriously WHAT ON EARTH. Everything's gone to hell and I feel like Harry, floundering around trying to figure out what's going on. MOLLY, WHAT THE HELL? most of all. Although small spoiler ). Anyway, there's still a good chunk of book left so maybe things will start ... making sense. Or not. I don't know!

- I am now 14 episodes into The Pretender! And getting more and more addicted. Jarod is strangely lovable. I do feel like the writers don't actually know what's going on with the Center and Jarod's past, but whatever, I was an X-Files fan and a Lost fan; I can cope with writers making up mythology as they go along.

- My Swamp Thing reading is still ongoing, by the way. I'm buried in Vol. 2. I am now being slowed down largely by the fact that I am increasingly creeped out by the whole Alec/Abby romance. I realize this makes no sense as I happily shipped Matt/Abby which is creepy as hell, but arrrgh. I think it's made worse by the fact that none of the writers seem to realize how creepy it is that they're writing Abby as increasingly dependent on and even (literally?) addicted to Alec. And the hallucinogenic aspect of the relationship doesn't help. Although I kind of lol'd over the fact that in Abby's fantasy of a perfect future with Alec, Matt showed up all healthy and happy and "I signed the divorce papers! You clearly belong with him, not me! Let's be BFF! :D" Oh, Abby. Go seek therapy.

Oh, hey, other real life news: I will be moving to a proper apartment in the middle of September, for the rest of the duration of my job contract. YAY for no longer living in a cheap hotel room. *counts down days*
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (c: k: dark)
So I am still not dead. YAY. I am teetering on the verge of complete burnout, though. :/ But in a week or so Illuminights ends and then stuff starts changing up so maybe a change of routine will help starve off that impending burnout.

I actually did have fandom-related stuff to talk about here, but I'm too tired to go into detail, so: bullet points!
♦ Alphas: Still really liking it. Enjoyed the focus on Rachel this week. She may be my favorite; might be too soon to tell.
♦ Torchwood: Getting less and less enthused each episode. It feels like they're treading the same water they did with COE only with EVEN MORE gratuitous torture porn.
♦ The Pretender: Have I mentioned that I've started watching this? No? Well, I've started watching The Pretender due to one of the guys I work with handing me the first season on DVD and telling me to watch it. My cultural backwardness, let me show you it. I am seven episodes in and enjoying it so far. Jared is endearing.
♦ Doctor Who: Yet another Season 6B trailer! OMG YAY. Is it time for new DW yet? *misses her show*
♦ ...no, wait, I think that might be it.

Did I miss anything?
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (misc: lj)
Thoughts on random things:

Livejournal: LJ! You're back! Are you stable? Pls? I MISSED YOU.
For anyone who didn't find out the details about why LJ was being difficult, this is a good article about the situation.

Music: Have an awesome link! A new JoCo song!

Facebook: I know a few of you had me friended on FB, so I'm just announcing it here for posterity's sake: I have officially deleted my FB account. There were several reasons for this, ranging from "I never use it" to "I'm uncomfortable with their privacy policies", but the end result is the same. I no longer have an account.
In related news, no, I will not be signing up for Google+.

Torchwood: Oh my God, I just ... I can't. There wasn't even any Dichen Lachman this week to distract me from the total lack of any internal logic, consistent characterization, or continuity in any form. What the hell, Torchwood, didn't you used to be enjoyable? Is it me or is it you? One of us has changed and it's not working anymore.

Alphas: But you're working for me, Alphas! I'm seriously enjoying this show so far. Nina and Rachel's complicated friendship warms my heart. I want more Bill; I feel like I don't know him well enough yet. Okay, I feel like I don't know any of the characters well enough yet, but Bill feels more like a blank slate to me than the rest of the cast for some reason. Hicks is generic and bland (omigosh he left a crime scene for coffee how ~rebellious) but I warmed up to him some for that last scene with Gary on the room. AWWW.

Work: It's been a hellish week. I don't wanna talk about it. Maybe next week will be better?
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (b: ew: unfair)
Something I learned over the past two days: everyone has exactly the same sense of humor when confronted with someone who has lost their voice. "What was that? Speak up, I couldn't hear you." "Why are you giving me the cold shoulder?" "You know, you've been really quiet today." "If you don't want me to do [thing that clearly should not be done] then speak up now!"

There was a lot of rude gesturing from me over the past two days. And occasional bouts of "I'm sick of trying to make myself understood, I will now mouth meaningless words while gesturing randomly and pretend that I'm actually saying something."

But! I seem to have my voice back now. I've stayed inside and not talked to people today in hopes of not blowing it out again since I have to be back at work tomorrow, but with luck it will stay back and I won't have to deal with this anymore.

While I was staying inside and not talking today, I watched the second episode of Alphas. Still enjoying it! Warming up to Gary. Rachel's still my favorite. Intrigued by the further hints of a dark past for Nina. This might be a new fandom for me. Anyone else at all watching it?
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: ms: drummers are cool)
So I watched the pilot episode of Alphas! And really liked it. It's not perfect, and like most pilot episodes it was exposition-heavy and awkward in places, but it's got a lot of potential. I like the characters, particularly Rachel (although I side-eye calling her a synesthete when she displays no signs of synethesia at all). Nina's kind of scary. I hope they touch on that in depth in future episodes because there's a lot of possible storylines there.

So anyway I'm going to keep watching it and hope it lives up to its potential. RHW is on the writing staff, so that's a good sign, right? (Yes, I watched the pilot episode because RHW's been pimping it out on his Twitter like crazy. I am a fangirl with a long list of shows to get caught up on. Hush.)
