I am kind of obsessed with The Name Of The Doctor tonight, so under the cut find pictures, speculation, and headcanon spitballing.

Super-spoilery, if you haven't seen the episode yet.

Sometimes it's like I've lived a thousand lives in a thousand places. )

I finally finished reading all of The Swamp Thing, up through the June 2012 release. Wow. It's over. Finally.

I have no idea if I'm going to keep up with it from here out or not.

Thoughts on the series as a whole beneath the cut.

Tefé Holland is too good for this series )
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: ms: drummers are cool)
This is kind of a late post, but, okay, here's three things from today:

One!
I hope everyone on my flist who celebrates American Thanksgiving, had a happy one! And those of you who don't celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope you had a happy November 24th! ♥

Two!
This is an actual conversation that happened:
My dad, randomly: "I miss the Great Dismal Swamp fire."
Me: " ... you miss the Great Dismal Swamp fire?"
My dad: "Yes."
Me: "But. It was a fire. In a swamp. A swamp called dismal."
My brother: " ... you know, I never actually considered the fact that the swamp is named 'Dismal' before ... "

Three!
After we ate Thanksgiving dinner (which was delicious), we (by which I mean me, my brother, and my parents) went out to a movie as a family ~thing.
And that movie?
THE MUPPETS, HELLS YEAH.

spoilery, mostly for character/dialogue/premise stuff, but a little bit of plot as well )

I want fic about the Electric Mayhem set between the last in-continuity movie and this one. For the record, I don't consider Muppets In Space to have been in-continuity.

HAPPY NOVEMBER 24TH, PEOPLE! ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

AWESOME THINGS:

- I have Internet back! WOO! And LJ is also back! Also woo! Stop leaving me, Internet access and LJ! I have dependencies!

- I now own a full-length black duster. We will not discuss the fact that it is early August, regularly reaching over 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and also southern Virginia. The point is that I now own a full-length black duster and this makes me happy even if I can't wear it for a few more months. (It was $15 at a CHKD thrift store. I can't resist that, okay.)

- New Doctor Who trailer! It is almost the same as the ComiCon trailer but not exactly and those not exactly bits are EXCITING and AWESOME. PTERODACTYLS, MAN.

- I received a $25 B&N gift card from my Secret Santa for my place of employment's Christmas In August thing. NEW BOOKS! Now I just have to find time and a bus route to get to a Barnes & Noble!

- *meaningless flail*
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (misc: lj)
Thoughts on random things:

Livejournal: LJ! You're back! Are you stable? Pls? I MISSED YOU.
For anyone who didn't find out the details about why LJ was being difficult, this is a good article about the situation.

Music: Have an awesome link! A new JoCo song!

Facebook: I know a few of you had me friended on FB, so I'm just announcing it here for posterity's sake: I have officially deleted my FB account. There were several reasons for this, ranging from "I never use it" to "I'm uncomfortable with their privacy policies", but the end result is the same. I no longer have an account.
In related news, no, I will not be signing up for Google+.

Torchwood: Oh my God, I just ... I can't. There wasn't even any Dichen Lachman this week to distract me from the total lack of any internal logic, consistent characterization, or continuity in any form. What the hell, Torchwood, didn't you used to be enjoyable? Is it me or is it you? One of us has changed and it's not working anymore.

Alphas: But you're working for me, Alphas! I'm seriously enjoying this show so far. Nina and Rachel's complicated friendship warms my heart. I want more Bill; I feel like I don't know him well enough yet. Okay, I feel like I don't know any of the characters well enough yet, but Bill feels more like a blank slate to me than the rest of the cast for some reason. Hicks is generic and bland (omigosh he left a crime scene for coffee how ~rebellious) but I warmed up to him some for that last scene with Gary on the room. AWWW.

Work: It's been a hellish week. I don't wanna talk about it. Maybe next week will be better?

Bullet points!

♠ I put my name on the AO3 waiting list, so we'll see what happens when that comes through and I actually have to. You know. Do stuff.

♠ I have officially booked a hotel room for this Wednesday. With check-in/check-out times it'll be more like 19 hours than 24, but that will still be immensely helpful. Isolation ♥♥♥ [/antisocial]

♠ Today I hit up a Borders clearance sale. And it's not that I'm happy they're going bankrupt, because I'm not, at all, it's really sad when bookstores can't stay open. But I did walk away with ~$80 worth of books and paid less than $8 for the lot. ...There was not a lot left on the shelves or I would've probably spent more than that. But y'know.

♠ There are evidently massive Doctor Who spoilers going around, and I would just like to alert everyone that, as much as a spoilerphile as I am, I would still appreciate not being spoiled about this. Please and thank you.

♠ Sometimes I feel sad and then I remember that I live in a world where Neil Gaiman wrote a Doctor Who episode and everything's shiny again. This is an oversimplification but nevertheless true.

♠ I wish I was in New York today to do the DW LineCon. MATT AND KAREN HANDED OUT DOUGHNUTS, YOU GUYS. WHY WAS I NOT THERE FOR THAT?

♠ I have finished Vol. 1 of The Swamp Thing and find myself getting annoyed by Alec Holland's unceasing emo. I suspect this is in part because every issue seems to feel the need to recap the first issue and I get frustrated at being repeatedly reminded of stuff I already know. (Also, they footnote everything. "After X happened, we knew we had to do Y!*" "*ed. note: as seen in issue #12" and I'm sure this was probably helpful to people reading one issue a month or whatever but for someone going at a faster rate OMG IT IS SO ANNOYING.) Also Matt and Abby have been MIA for much of the latter part of the volume which is frustrating because I find myself caring more about them than about the Swamp Thing himself. Maybe Vol. 2 will be an easier read?

♠ That was a really long bullet point, I'm sorry. Evidently I have more ~feelings about old comics than I suspected myself of.

...edited to fix tags and close a parentheses. *facepalm*
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (m: b&tb: reading rocks)
So apparently Borders is declaring bankruptcy and closing a bunch of bookstores, which is actually pretty sad. I remember when I was a kid and the only major bookstore I had regular access to was the WaldenBooks at the local mall. And then Borders bought them out and they were still WaldenBooks, technically, but with different rewards cards and a website and a new store layout. And then a couple years ago they closed and I stopped considering that mall to be a mall (you can't be a shopping mall without a bookstore, okay, you can't). And then six months or so ago they opened a Borders Express in that mall and I begrudgingly let them reclaim the title. And then last time I went which was like a month or two ago they were having a going-out-of-business clearance sale, which was...ridiculous, they'd been there about five months.

Which is a roundabout way of saying that it makes me sad when bookstores close.

(Also sad: that the more-local independent bookstore sucks and only wants your business if you know exactly what you want and spend under five minutes finding and purchasing it. You are an independent bookstore. You are supposed to encourage browsing and community and people who enjoy looking for a book when they're not sure exactly what they want to buy and whatever.)
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (t: [tos]: innocent bystander)
Word count: 24,290. I'm very nearly at the halfway point!

...A lot of this is going to come out in editing, though. There's quite a lot of "I can't think of anything to write so the characters in this scene are going to banter irrelevantly and with poor segue skills."

Fitz has shown up again and I'm enjoying writing him, though Mila and Nalini don't seem inclined to accept his assistance.

I thought I had something non-NaNo to talk about here but I can't remember what it was. So, sorry. :(
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (misc: nanowrimo 2010)
Reread last year's NaNo in one sitting and am surprised that there are parts of it I don't hate. Mostly dialogue, admittedly, but given that like 90% of the thing is dialogue that's not saying too much.

I don't think it's salvageable as is. The in-universe timeline is ridiculous and makes no sense, it's paced horribly, and about halfway through I decided to drop a subplot because of POV issues and then another third of the way through I decided to reintroduce it, IDEK. But I was really surprised to find so many parts that I actually like. Maybe one day I'll be able to salvage the concept, at least.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (tv: a: beka)
In which I muse some more on a genderflipped Andromeda. Because my brain is cyclic like that. Or because I'm obsessive about weird random shit. Or because I'm trying not to stress about important things and this is fun, idk. One of those, probably. Maybe a combination of all of the above.

cut for length mostly )

Thoughts?

I've clearly ridiculously overthought this and it is probably an indication that there is Something Wrong With Me, but whatever, it's a fun diversion. I'd like to be able to say that there will be fic as a result of all this overthinking, but I have learned not to promise fic-related things. There might be?
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Doctor Who - Amy is fab)
The newest round of the Amy Pond debate is going around, so I'm going to share some of my thoughts, disorganized as they are.

when is a duck pond not a duck pond? when it's an amy )

Not really related: I want to know when/how/why Amy became a master pickpocket, because there has to be a story behind how she got those mad skillz. In Leadworth.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (LOST - everybody's thinking it)
I've been poking at doing a Top-10-Episodes-Of-LOST picspam, and while doing so have noticed a couple interesting things.

It also led me to reflect on some things not directly tied to episode trends or whatever.

Since none of this would have any place in the aforementioned picspam, if I ever even get around to doing it, I'm going to post them here.

1. There are four Charlie-centric episodes: The Moth, Homecoming, Fire + Water, Greatest Hits. All but one of those is strongly Claire-influenced as well. "The Moth" is not only the only Charlie-centric episode where Claire doesn't play a major role; she doesn't appear in it at all. ...this is made all the stranger by the fact that The Moth is followed by Confidence Man, which is infamous for its Charlie/Claire adorableness. (Peanut butter. ♥)

2. Walt has never had (and likely never will have :/) his own flashback episode, and I want to say he's the only original member of the main cast not to have one. He has a scene in Michael's first flashback episode (there's a flashback in Special to Walt and Brian and Susan at home in Australia, the bird dies, etc.) which is clearly his flashback, not Michael's, as Michael is not present for the scene, but the episode is otherwise entirely Michael's. And aside from the dead bird thing, the scene tells us nothing about Walt.
2a. As an aside, I think this is an interesting and weird choice because it's never repeated. We have multi-person-centric episodes (a lot of season openers and closers, plus episodes like "Confirmed Dead), and we have episodes that center around somebody who has pre-Island ties to someone else on the Island (Shannon & Boone, Sun & Jin, etc.), but in the former case the episode's flashbacks are split approximately evenly between participants and in the latter the flashbacks are clearly from one person's POV (hence how we get half the story with the bloody-shirt bathroom scene from Sun's POV in one episodes, and then half a season later get the rest of the story from Jin's perspective). "Special" is the only case I can think of where the flashbacks are entirely from Person A's perspective except for one isolated scene.
2b. Also, having said this, someone is going to point out another original cast member who didn't have a flashback episode. Or another case of isolated-flashback-from-Person-B's-perspective. I welcome corrections.

3. There are a lot of stories I don't think are going to get tied up before the end of the series, and that makes me sad. I mean, these are stories that logically don't need tying up; they're not relevant to the main plot, most viewers would have forgotten about them by now, and they never were all that important to the story being told. Still, I get attached to minor characters and minor plots and it makes me sad.

4. I miss the old-school feel of the show. I like where it's gone, I think they've taken the story in the direction it needed to go in, and I don't think the season one tone was sustainable. But I miss it; I miss the camps, and Shannon sunbathing, and Hurley wondering whether Vincent can track water, and everyone worrying over food supplies, and the sense that the Island was unknown but knowable (as opposed to full of people if you just walked a couple more feet I mean seriously how did you not know about the temple and New Otherton and the friggin' lighthouse and *rages*), and I have to say I miss the big hulking corpse of Oceanic 815 sitting over half the scenes. Not sustainable, but fabulous.

5. Hey, remember way back in the day when people were raging over the introduction of more characters? About how, dammit, we're attached to "our" characters, we don't want them pushed in the background for some new characters, this is the moment the show jumped the shark! ...how many of those people do you think are now listing Desmond, Juliet, Ben, Richard, Daniel, Miles, etc., among their favorite characters?
5a. Also, remember that other group of people who insisted that if Darlton were introducing a new bunch of 815 survivors they would turn out to be important to the story, dammit? Remember how most all of the Tailies were dead within a season and a half and didn't really do that much while they were there? ...ahaha. I mean, I love Bernard, and I love Libby and she is still relevant, and I'm glad we had Eko even for as short as we did, but really.
5b. Srsly, if we'd had Frank from the beginning, either the plane wouldn't have crashed (win for them!) or we would have had six seasons of Frank Lapidus on our screens (win for us!) Why did this not happen?
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Andromeda - Harper)
So I have been reading a lot of old Andromeda fic. Why? I don't know. Because. That's not the point.

extremely old stuff about pre-Maru Harper and Andromeda fandom )

YMM, of course, V. I over-think stuff.

Also, I should probably get a life. Or at least babble on at length about a fandom I'm overinvested in for a fandom that isn't really fairly old and forgotten in Internet terms. :/
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Animorphs - RDU - he's blue!)
OKAY SO.

I'm here! Hi! I'm going to be answering comments as I can, but my connection kind of sucks, so I thought I'd try and get this up first.

I am in Maine, I am at the theater. Well, I'm not actually at the theater right now, I'm in my room. The theater is across the street. ANYWAY. I had a company dinner on Sunday and orientation-stuff and a welcome-you-guys-party yesterday and today was my first real day of work. It went pretty okay? We got more done than I thought we would; I shanghaied a few TAs, tech interns, and an actor to serve as my crew, and we managed to strike all of last year's light rep plot and get up a good chunk of this year's. There was only one major ladder accident and neither the crew nor the theater suffered any permanent damage. Still have two and a bit electrics, two side pipes, and assorted odds and ends to do. That's tomorrow's project, if I can throw together a crew.

Unexpectedly, I have a computer. We stayed at my aunt and uncle's place in Bath for Saturday night, and I was sort of whining at the world, as you do, about my laptop being in California and therefore useless to me, and my aunt recalled a desktop she had in storage that no one had used in like four years and graciously donated it to me. Okay it's a desktop and it's like five years old but IT'S A COMPUTER. It even has a wireless card. I'm not going to complain about anything. I have a computer and Internet, yayyy. (Although the Net connection, as previously mentioned, kind of sucks. I don't know if it's the local wireless or if it's this computer's card, but...yeah.)

I'm very tired and also kind of wired so I'm going to post this and go back to trying to pick through my flist.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Kendra Kassebaum)
Back from the optometrist's, with new glasses. It's a very odd feeling, being able to see properly.

Amusingly (or not), there was a paperwork mixup of some sort and they put the wrong lens in the left eye and I put them on and was like "I CAN'T SEE, BLURRY" and they were like "Oh, it's a change, you just need to adjust" and I was like "No, I know what it feels like when I can suddenly see the world properly and need to adjust to that, this is BLURRY" and they got huffy but checked and when I could see fine with the right eye but NOTHING AT ALL with the left they conceded that they'd made a mistake. And they fixed it. And now I can see properly.

I babble a lot, don't I? My sentence structure is so weird.
chicafrom3: photo of the TARDIS (Lost - Miles)
Awesomely, I just wasted like an hour playing The Oregon Trail (version 1.2, according to the "about the Oregon Trail" menu thing. There's real graphics. It's somewhat disconcerting). I started from Independence, Missouri, in April with Naomi (a banker) leading a team consisting of Daniel, Charlotte, Miles, and Frank. (Why yes, I am, in fact, a dork.) First Daniel got sick and died, then Miles died of cholera, then Frank got sick and died, but the girls arrived in Willamette Valley, Oregon, in December in good health.

I am more amused by this than is probably logical. I think next time I play I'll do Jack leading Gwen, Owen, Tosh, and Ianto. Or maybe the Doctor, Barbara, Ian, Susan, and...uh...fill in who the fifth member of their party should be, if you please. Vicki? Vicki never traveled with Susan but I could lie like a lying thing. The Doctor, Donna, Martha, Jack, Sarah Jane, and Mickey. Ned, Chuck, Emerson, Olive, and Alfredo. Tommy, Jimmy, Jenny, Kevin, and Sean. Harry, Murphy, Thomas, Ramirez, and Molly. Seriously, I could totally make up wagon teams from most if not all of my fandoms!

There was a secret on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets about the secret-poster wanting to make Facebook profiles for hir original characters. And...now I kind of want to do that. I barely even use my own Facebook profile, wtf. And I probably wouldn't do anything with them once I'd made them. But still. *flails a bit* It's a very weird urge which I will try to sublimate.

I wish I wasn't such a rubbish role player, though. Because I remember I used to enjoy role playing, and I'd actually really like to get back into it -- my original characters or my fandom characters, I'm not picky -- but I seem to have lost the knack. I've tried a couple times with LJ-based role plays and I just...I fail. It's very sad. I envy you guys who are such awesome RPers.

"Are you saying that women or girls, little girls that don't feed into America's consumerism and the objectification of women are, must have, like, had brain surgery?"
"No, I'm saying Marco says that."

I just finished #10 The Android of ARD:U, and am now faced with a dilemma -- do I go ahead and listen to the available parts of #11 The Forgotten, or skip it until the missing parts are discovered or re-recorded and in the meantime move on to the David trilogy? Opinions welcome.

There's no LOST tonight and now I'm sad. :( I don't want to have to wait another week to find out what's going on! The [livejournal.com profile] lostsquee drabble challenge is distracting, though.

I'm pretty sure I had other things I wanted to say here, but I don't remember any of them now, so, uh, end of post!
