Elementary 1x21 A Landmark Story )

Alternate post title I seriously considered using: "He said he wanted to take me to dinner to discuss the fact that I'm a serial killer."

OH MY GOD A MARCUS BELL EPISODE

It is my new favorite episode.

The subplot with Holmes trying to train Watson's self-defense instincts against her will and the truth about her employment coming out and Holmes' reaction and that utterly perfect ending scene with the two of them only made it even better.

But mostly OH MY GOD MARCUS BELL YOU ARE THE GREATEST

BEST EPISODE?

BEST EPISODE.

Elementary 1x15 A Giant Gun, Filled With Drugs )

That was an unexpectedly emotional episode. Previews for next week look less emotionally intense, though!

Elementary 1x14 The Deductionist )

Altogether, yes, a satisfactory way of trying to bring in new viewers; some of the techniques used, particularly the opening sequence, were cheap, but overall it was a solid episode that gave a good look at the team, at the Holmes/Watson dynamic, and at the sort of cases they usually tackle.

No in-depth thoughts on tonight's Elementary, sorry, but I just wanted to mention how much I love the character arc they're building for Holmes -- how they're slowly dismantling his "It doesn't matter what people think of me, I don't need anyone, I have INTELLECT" shell and showing how it affects him when people like Watson or Gregson or Bell think poorly of him.

And I also love that they didn't just gloss over the fact that last episode he was willing to torture a man to death for revenge. Gregson's reactions throughout this episode were spot-on.

Word count: 13,001. A little behind schedule but I'm reasonably confident I can at least catch up to the minimum before bed.

Trying to get Bridget rescued from the disguised dolphin. It's proving more difficult than predicted, but I'll get her back eventually!

(Also, continuing to enjoy Elementary, specifically the Holmes/Watson friendship, which continues to develop both believably and interestingly.)

Elementary 1x04 The Rat Race )

The unfortunate side effect of watching Elementary: I keep cursing the fact that it's not yet cold enough here to get away with wearing scarves.

I should probably get around to getting an Elementary icon.

Shows I have successfully gotten caught up on: Elementary, Merlin, Red Dwarf, Castle.

Brief non-spoilery thoughts:

Elementary: Continuing to enjoy it in a thoughtless kind of way. I wouldn't say I'm ~hooked, but I am enjoying it. I like this characterization of Holmes more than some, and Lucy Liu is, you know, flawless at everything. The mysteries are (so far) fairly dull, but that's okay; I don't watch procedurals for the awesome mysteries.

Merlin: Gwen is a badass and should be in charge of everything. ... That's pretty much it. I'm increasingly bad at actually watching Merlin; it doesn't seem to hold my attention these days. :|

Red Dwarf: Still has the magic! It made me feel all happy and bubbly and giddy. Lister is one of my favorite dudes on TV ever, for real. I was worried that they might have lost the groove in the long hiatus, but no! They still know how to make quality Red Dwarf.

Castle: So glad about the relationship developments. Also, Alexis continues to be my favorite. The mysteries continue to get more and more ridiculous, but that's kind of one of the reasons for watching, isn't it?

Watched the Elementary pilot tonight!

(In all honesty, I acquired the leaked version weeks ago and intended to watch it, and then never got around to it. Oops. So instead I watched the final version on CBS tonight. Late but legal!)

Anyway, I actually really enjoyed it. Lucy Liu is flawless, and Jonny Lee Miller's take on Holmes worked well for me, and the Holmes/Watson dynamic was brilliant and rang true. There's a couple things that don't entirely work for me (mostly Holmes' relationship with his family and Watson's backstory), and the cinematography is sadly very dull, but overall, it gets a thumbs up.

...So far, anyway. It's CBS, so better-than-even odds that it'll turn into a very formulaic procedural within a few episodes. Then again, the Sherlock Holmes mythos lends itself well to procedural-format, so maybe it will Overcome The Genre. Or something. IDK.

Some thoughts on media I consume:

▼ Obtained and watched the pilot of Continuum, because Lexa Doig. (Lexa! You were not in this enough, I hope you get more screentime in future episodes.) There was bonus William B. Davis, too, that's always nice. Oh, God, the future society is awesome. In the really-interesting-to-watch way, not the place-I-want-to-live way. I really love the way the justice system works there. They don't even bother bringing the perps in themselves, just inject them with (something?) that puts them in pain if they don't bring themselves in, that's awesome. ♥
And then TIME TRAVEL and CULTURE CLASH and INTRAGROUP CONFICT oh God, this show is hitting all my narrative kinks. Well, not all of them. But a lot.
Alec reminds me of both Topher and Harper. That's not a complaint. Kind of a low-key, low-self-esteem, low-drive variation, though. Also not a complaint. I like him already.
Kiera's a pretty straightforward version of the trope, but they pull it off. She's not very hard-edged, but she's clever and determined and capable and you believe she can get the job done. I like that she adapts to being in 2012, but she doesn't do so immediately or flawlessly. She's not a great liar.
No, seriously, the best part of this so far is that I like both sides. I like Kiera, I like Ingram. I like Alec, I like the rest of the Liber8 group (I want more information on them, tho). Blurry lines between the good guys and the bad guys = awesome.
I kind of predicted the twist at the end re: Alec, but it still worked well.

Altogether, a good start to a new show.

▼ After entirely too long, I have successfully finished reading Vol. 2 of The Swamp Thing. Sadly, my dislike of the title character has not decreased at all. I also really disliked Mark Millar's take on Abby, though that might be because it was really clear he didn't like her. I dig Tefé a lot, though. Apparently Vol. 3 is supposed to focus more on her, so I'm hoping that will make it an easier read. I also found myself like Constantine far more than I expected to; once I finish Swamp Thing I'm going to have to tackle Hellblazer, I think.

▼ So Elementary looks kind of interesting. On the one hand I am hopeful because LUCY LIU; on the other hand I have no hope because CBS. But I'll probably give it a shot. I'm an easy sell on Holmes adaptations anyway.

Kagerou is updating again, which makes me extremely happy even as the actual updates depress the hell out of me. I just want to give Kid a hug. And Dark, if he promises not to info-dump traumatic memories into my head. And Fuuka, too. She needs a good hug.

▼ Jenna-Louise Coleman has started filming on Doctor Who! I am excite. XD Why are there no spoilers about her yet some of us require those to live
