Well that is certainly one way to try to hang on to the Superbowl viewers. Hookers! And half-naked JLM! And hookers grinding on half-naked JLM! And then it turns out the hookers are thieves so REALLY THEY'RE NARRATIVELY THERE TO SHOW THAT HOLMES IS A DETECTIVE NOT FOR SEXY ENTICEMENTS AT ALL. Ahaha.
Even aside from that there was a good bit more sex in this episode than is standard. They really want more viewers, huh.
Raise your hand if you saw the murders coming as soon as the dude was uncuffed! GUYS THIS IS WHY YOU CUFF HIM TO THE BED EVEN IF YOU'RE SURE HE'S UNCONSCIOUS.
Watson's consternation over her apartment was a cute touch. (Although seriously, CBS, spending an episode talking about how porn was filmed in Watson's apartment and then taking several opportunities to show the porn that was filmed in Watson's apartment? You are very transparent.)
Kind of love Holmes and Drummond being matched on their profile of the killer and then being matched in their bewilderment of his behavior. Also Holmes has serious issues with women he cares about; that scene with him projecting his resentment of Drummond all over the killer (I know he has a name I just can't remember it) was pretty dark, even if he was right. "All you have to do is give me Kathryn Drummond." "That seems quite reasonable." SERIOUSLY, HOLMES? YOU'RE ALREADY ON PROBATION FOR HAVING SHAKY MORALS.
"You even made a friend, something Kathryn in her article claimed was impossible."
Blank look.
"Me."
Blank look.
"I'm talking about me."
And a return of Holmes barging into Watson's room to wake her, playing personal valet while she just lies there wishing him dead. I want a scene like that in every episode, tbh, although as long as cases keep getting solved by Watson making medical observations and deducing from that, I will have no complaints regardless. ♥
The killer's sister disturbed the hell out of me, though; just the very dissociated way she was dealing with things throughout her confession scene. (Who permanently damages their own kidney for a chance at revenge? D:)
And then Holmes gets to be COMPLETELY BADASS in the handcuffs/gun scene. Well done, Holmes.
And then Watson gets her own badass moment with her landlord. Well done to you, too. You two are a matched pair of Not Taking People's Shit. "I also want $1200 for that couch, because after everything it's been through in that movie it needs to be taken out back and shot."
Also, with every episode I love Marcus Bell more. I just needed to say that. I want a Bell-centric episode at some point. I realize that's not likely to happen as it is the Holmes & Watson show, but I still want it.
"I'm confused, are you saying that you did something to my toothbrush?"
"..."
"Sherlock..."
Altogether, yes, a satisfactory way of trying to bring in new viewers; some of the techniques used, particularly the opening sequence, were cheap, but overall it was a solid episode that gave a good look at the team, at the Holmes/Watson dynamic, and at the sort of cases they usually tackle.
