So the thing is, not only is the best thing about this show the Holmes/Watson relationship -- the writers get that, completely.
First I flailed over Sherlock getting Joan to do the autopsy just by trying to do it completely ineptly. And then I flailed over the "what's different about me is you" scene, because AUGH YES. That was gorgeous. Thank you, Holmes, thank you for acknowledging Watson's influence on you.
And then Watson goes along with the illegal kidnapping of the murderer, because Holmes has promised his intent is not torture/murder. I JUST. THESE TWO. (It's his intent not to shoot up heroin, and he wants to stay clean, but he doesn't swear that he will, because he doesn't trust himself that much, and, I JUST.)
Love the fact that they included the "Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it" line, and Watson's perfectly in-character response.
Um. In other aspects:
The only time Moriarty canceled a hit was the hit on Holmes. Interesting.
I'm pretty fascinated by Holmes' way of getting a picture of the suspected Moriarty. Would that actually work? The theory seems sound but I don't know much about photography; it could be a completely made up for TV technique.
I found myself amused that even when Holmes abandoned Watson to test himself with John Douglas, he left a note for her to read in bed. He's just got a thing about communicating with her while she's in bed, doesn't he?
Holmes's delayed reaction to Douglas's death was kind of perfect.
The ending was disquieting as hell. Starting from Holmes trying to get Moriarty's men to decode the message for him and straight through Moran's suicide. Freaked me out more than anything else on this show so far. I don't know if that says something about me.
And then of course we end on a cliffhanger. OF COURSE.
Alternate post title I seriously considered using: "He said he wanted to take me to dinner to discuss the fact that I'm a serial killer."
