And the next Doctor is...
JODIE WHITTAKER!
I am RIDICULOUSLY excited. I'm also still upset about losing Peter. Both of these things are true at the same time.
My excitement is for multiple reasons. In contrast to fifty-odd years of Doctor Who fandom history, I am predisposed to love any new Doctor as soon as they're announced, an attitude that has yet to steer me wrong. I love the way new cast completely changes the show and I'm excited to see the direction Herself and Chibnall take things in. I am absurdly excited for the first official female Doctor (Joanna Lumley, much as I love her, does not count, despite being the OTHER female Thirteen). Just in that tiny official but not exactly in-character clip she already looks SO DOCTORY. What's she going to be like? Shouty, quiet, intense, funny, charming, abrasive? Who will her companions be? (WILL BILL AND HEATHER BE JOINING HER IN THE TARDIS AFTER CHRISTMAS? Probably not but I can hope?) What will her dynamic with them be like? BFF, mentor/teacher, grandparent, scary adventuring companion? WHAT WILL HER COSTUME BE? (My preliminary and baseless hope: jeans and a frock coatI don't care if the frock coat is overdone I like them and maybe a nifty hat. Or steampunk. Or piratey like they were supposedly originally planning for Matt's Doctor. But no dresses, please. At least not as a primary costume, maybe as an occasional variation?) I haven't seen her in anything else yet but people I trust have said she was spectacular in Broadchurch and Black Mirror and I have no reason to believe she'll be anything BUT spectacular in Doctor Who.
My upset is for one reason. I've adored Peter as the Doctor for his entire run. He's rapidly moved up the list to become my second-favorite Doctor. (I'm pretty sure no one will supplant Hartnell, and the fact that we're getting a Twelve-and-One adventure at Christmas has sent me into five months of pure delight even BEFORE we got the confirmation the next Doctor will be female.) I don't think I'm ready to say goodbye to him, no matter how excited I am to say hello to his successor.
DILEMMA.
But today, I'm mostly SO EXCITED.
