First of all I have to get some geekgasm out of the way because you have NO IDEA how long I have been wondering about Charlie Scully. He gets these tiny mentions in the original series that amount to BASICALLY NOTHING and given how much we know about Bill and Melissa and their dynamics with both their mother and Dana, that fascinates me so much. Why is the fourth Scully sibling so ignored?
That is a question I definitely did not expect the revival to address, omg. I mean, there's still a bunch of questions left (WHY IS HE ESTRANGED FROM THE FAMILY AND FROM MAGGIE SPECIFICALLY for one) but that they addressed it at all!
The whole Margaret Scully plot was devastating and incredible and messed me up a lot, seriously. I don't want to downplay it because of my weird Charlie Scully fascination. Maybe I was inexplicably unspoiled or something (I am mostly unspoiled for the majority of this season! this is very strange for me!) but I wasn't expecting any of this, and it really hit hard -- particularly seeing Scully and Mulder sitting on either side of her bed, quietly referencing the similarities to Scully's own coma, and Scully's breakdown upon seeing the gurney. "I NEED TO WORK RIGHT NOW."
On a lighter note, "Scully, back in the day is now." Followed by flashlights in a dark warehouse! And Mulder totally breaking apart the Trashman's interpretation of Tibetan thought forms, awesome.
A solid and creepy X-File I have not talked about at all because it is completely overshadowed by a heartbreaking personal story. A+.
Also, we're building up to bringing William actively into the story by the end of the season, right? This can't be going nowhere. (Unless he's dead, as I theorized in previous posts because GIVING HIM UP TO STRANGERS WAS SO STUPID, but I'm not sure the writers realize what a stupid move that was or would go there even if they did.) "And I want to believe -- I need to believe -- that we didn't treat him like trash." :(
