What a weird Tonys.
First of all, to be upfront: I missed chunks of the ceremony (both ceremonies) because a) I was watching it while working and b) I had problems with Paramount+. But I saw most of it. I'm also very tired and I have to work in the morning, so this is a summary of my thoughts on this weird year, rather than a liveblog.
- MJ won a LOT for a show that had, like, no buzz. I swear to you I've heard next to nothing about MJ. Myles Frost's speech was cute as hell, though.
- A Strange Loop and Six, which I'd considered the frontrunners, took home barely anything. I was getting very concerned about Best Musical by the end and was extremely relieved when they announced A Strange Loop (100% deserved). Can't believe they cut off Michael R. Jackson's mic, wow.
- Company won a LOT. That's not a surprise, it's a great production (still can't believe Katrina Lenk wasn't nominated), just an observation. (I mean, I guess it kind of is a surprise given how A Strange Loop and Six were snubbed, but.) I was not expecting Chris Harper Who Pays My Salary to become the running joke of the night; when Bunny Christie said it I stopped what I was doing to say 'did she actually say that' and by the time we got to Best Revival I was fully expecting it. CHRIS HARPER PAYS ALL OF OUR WAGES. This might actually push me into buying a t-shirt. (Not the officially licensed one, I'm sure I can find a cuter one.)
- Some great performances, especially A Strange Loop. Not The Music Man, that killed any interest I had in seeing it; Sutton is charming but wow that was bad. I have zero interest in Spring Awakening but I'm sure the reunion performance was emotional for people who are invested in the OBC. The Sondheim tribute wrecked me.
- It was just a weird night, IDK. I actually have no arguments against any of the individual awards, but cumulatively they're weird.
