I had to put off writing this post for a little bit because my initial reaction was just going to be "asjlkgnejarhnaekkjrng" at length.
Short version: I LOVE EVERYONE IN THISBAR SHOW.
Longer version:
- The plot: Tim Shaw was properly creepy and I loved notFoxMulder guy and honestly the plot is always the least important part of a Doctor Who post-regeneration episode, it really just needs to be serviceable to get the Doctor and companion(s) moving. Which it did!
- Grace: I'm so upset she was killed off. Not surprised, exactly, since we knew going in that there would be three companions and she would not be one of them, and she was too gung-ho about the whole thing to just decide to stay behind. But upset. She was lovely and would've made an excellent companion... not to mention Graham and Ryan's reactions breaking my heart. "She went out the way she lived. Helping people."
- Graham: He's not super into the whole companion thing yet, is he? I mean. Protective of Ryan and (eventually) on board with the Doctor, but the spirit of adventure is not yet with him. Which means it's going to be fun watching him slowly come around. His enjoyment over things like "ask a bus driver" is delightful, and having someone more sensible around is always both a good idea and a fun companion dynamic.
- Yaz: Got the short end of the characterization stick this episode, I'm afraid, but I'm looking forward to more of her. And looking forward to her finding fulfillment; she's so dissatisfied with handling parking disputes, she needs something more. (And her first (re-)meeting with Ryan was adorable. They're so excited!)
- Ryan: Got most of the characterization focus this episode; I suspect we'll also have at least one episode each focusing on Graham and Yaz and other episodes where they're more equally in focus. His frustration with his disorder and the ways it limits him, his determination to get past it (his decision to climb the crane!!), and how hurt he is when Graham throws it at him in a moment of anger -- all amazing. But even outside of his dyspraxia, he gets so many lovely little moments: "Police? Maybe?" and figuring out what the Doctor is doing with his phone (shortly after "all my stuff's on there!" #relatable) and looking up how to drive a crane on YouTube (I assume YouTube, since he's a YouTuber; they didn't actually say where he looked up how to drive the crane, I guess). ♥♥
- THE DOCTOR, and she IS the Doctor. From regeneration weirdness ("This nose is so unreliable" and "These legs definitely used to be longer" and "Really craving a fried egg sandwich.") to pure Doctorish unreliability (refusing to answer Graham's concerns about the DNA bombs and "anyone would've done the same" "I wouldn't!" "I WOULD HAVE!" and her response to Ryan's panic about his phone being "Not anymore! :D" and "I have a plan! Or I will have. By the time we reach the top.") to badassery ("Sorting out fair play throughout the universe.") and kindness ("I carry them with me. What they would have thought, said and done. Make them a part of who I am. So even though they're gone from the world, they're never gone from me." and yes I caught the Tomb of the Cybermen echo there and I love it). As much as I've been onboard the Jodie train since she was announced, there was still a part of me that felt like it wasn't quite real -- no more, she's here, she's THE DOCTOR and she's going to save the universe and I LOVE HER.
Honestly, that's it overall: I love everyone. I'm so excited about this season, and a little bit bitter that I'm not going to be able to watch it live aside from this episode (I used a day of vacation to make sure I could catch this one priorities), but I will be watching and rewatching as soon as I can.
