chicafrom3Holy shit, I think this is the first Tony reaction post I've ever made where tears of joy beat every other reaction.
First of all, OMG MY BABIES. <3 <3 <3 Once took home 8 of the 11 awards they were nominated, losing out only on Choreography and the two Actresses categories, all three of which were predictable losses and I don't care. I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW. FOR ONCE THE SHOW I LOVED BEST GOT RECOGNIZED BY THE TONYS AS IT DESERVED. THIS MAKES UP FOR SO MANY WAYS THE TONYS HAVE SCREWED ME OVER OVER THE YEARS.
My prediction sheet on a whole did a huge amount better than I expected/I usually do, actually. I got 19 out of 26 categories right, and the ones I got wrong I either didn't care much about or the one I wanted to win beat out the one I thought would win, so, seriously, were they deliberately writing the awards to please me?
Both opening numbers were great. I'm not a huge Book Of Mormon fan and also I still hold a grudge from Scottsboro Boys being shut out but they've got a reasonably enjoyable show, and the "Hello" opening was well done, particularly everyone's confused or annoyed faces as they opened and closed doors and Neil's reaction to being handed a Bible. The two new leads look like they'll do a good job, though since they've been understudying those roles for ages I suppose that's not unexpected. NPH's opening number was brilliant, particularly Jesse Tyler Ferguson's cameo, and sending Annie offstage because the revival doesn't open until the fall. (Actually, NPH's face during that entire segment. He just looked so confused by this perky little orphan girl talking to him ... )
They actually managed a funny Spider-Man gag, so well done NPH!
The closing number was great, too. "Once won once, Once won twice, then Once won more." I may have mangled that line. Must find recording. Can I get this and Neil's opening number on my iPod, please?
Favorite speeches:
Steve Kazee making everyone cry. EVERYONE. Let's face it even the bitter Newsies and B&C fans cried over that speech. Though the announcer introducing him as "playing the unnamed Boy" made me nerdrage a little. No, announcer, he plays the unnamed Guy. [/loses everyone's respect] ETA: ALSO, Cristin starting a standing ovation for him. YOU ARE BOTH MY NEW FAVORITE PEOPLE.
James Corden getting all flustered and emotional and confused.
Nina Arianda refusing to let the music cut her off because "I might not do this again, hold on". (Plus the adorable "you were my first crush" bit, arrrgh, why are you so cute.)
"I found the theater, and I found my home." OH GOD, AUDRA, YOU ARE A FLAWLESS PERSON. And then the speech she gave to her daughter and OH GOD MORE TEARS.
Performance:
...Actually, pretty much the one place the Tonys fell down this year.
Once was flawless and if you don't agree we're not friends anymore. [/might be exaggerating a little but it really was flawless okay] ETA: And that shot of Glen and Mar in the audience looking so proud and arrrrgh so many feelings ♥♥♥
Peter & The Starcatcher was flawless, too. Christian Borle holding a knife to NPH's neck! "And it got us on TV!"
One Man Two Guvnors: Also flawless.
Porgy And Bess. Audra McDonald is a perfect person.
Not flawless:
Newsies. I understand why they picked Seize The Day, as it showcases the choreography (best part of the show, for reals) and it's one they haven't beat into the ground on news shows, but it came across awkwardly. (Still the best of the performances aside from the ones listed above, tho.)
Ghost The Musical. I may be biased by my dislike of this show, but wow, that performance had no energy. Which is sad, because I like Caissie Levy. Go be in a better show, Caissie. Also, with that staging if I knew nothing about the show I'd think it was a love triangle between dead guy, his girlfriend, and his boyfriend.
Evita. What a weird song choice. I get that they wanted to showcase the dancing and Ricky Martin, but ... really, what a weird song choice.
Jesus Christ Superstar. My dad loves JCS, and watched the ceremony with me specifically to see the revival's performance, and it left both of us cold. The staging's uninteresting, and Josh Young just did not come across well.
Godspell. Corbin Bleu, see what I just said to Caissie Levy. I LIKE YOU. GO BE IN BETTER SHOWS. (Although I actually am quite fond of Godspell, just ... not this production.)
Nice Work If You Can Get It. What a weirdly dead-energy performance. Medleys are good, in my opinion, but ... I don't know this show at all (it's the only nominated musical I know next to nothing about) but there weren't any higher energy/more interesting numbers to do?
Follies. I want to cut them lots of slack because of the whole closed in LA last night / flew to New York to do the Tonys thing, but wow, that number did not in anyway make me want to see the show or improve my opinion of it. This might just be a personal opinion thing, IDK, it's not a show I enjoy on a basic level.
Hairspray, what the actual hell were you doing there. Not only were you completely out of place, you also were just plain terrible.
Leap Of Faith was definitely not flawless but I can't include it with the rest of that list because OMG RAUL IN A SPARKLY JACKET AND KENDRA IN A ROLLING STONES TEE AND THE REST OF THAT FLAWLESS, FLAWLESS CAST THAT DESPERATELY NEEDS TO FIND A BETTER SHOW BECAUSE THEY ARE AMAZING
But, yeah, overall, way more YAY than NAY. For once in my life. Thank you, Tonys. ♥
Also, for the Doctor Who fans on my flist who do not care about the Tonys, you missed James Corden on an American stage receiving a Tony Award with a speech that included the line, "She's my baby mama and I can't wait to marry her."
That's right, you missed the opportunity to hear Craig Owens use the phrase "baby mama".
