Discussion on ExIsle about an imagined Andromeda!reboot. Some of the ideas left me "...", some left me "o.0", and some are "YAY". (Enver Gjokaj as Harper? YES PLS.) (I still LU, GMW, promise.) (Although the later idea of gender-flipping Harper and Rommie and letting Enver play all of Andromeda's incarnations is fabulous. Also, Gina Torres as a gender-flipped Tyr, YES PLS. ♥)

...really, I love the original cast dearly, I just like this imaginary casting, too.

...maybe I am now contemplating a fully gender-flipped imaginary casting of Andromeda.

Such an awesome concept, really. Maybe that would be a good idea for a future [livejournal.com profile] andromeda_fans challenge! A little picspam with updated actors :)

I would really like to see a more serious version of Andromeda. Someone mentioned over there about Beka & Harper cracking jokes, and Dylan & Rommie being straight and serious.. this would be perfect. And so true.

Wow, I think I'm going to sign into ExIsle (for the first time in years) and make a few comments :)

*coughs* I've actually put together a fantasy!genderbent!casting for all of the S1 crew but Trance and Rev. If I can decide on those two, I will put together a picspam and challenge [livejournal.com profile] andromeda_fans to come up with their own casting. Or if somebody you somebody beats me to it, throw my ideas over there as part of the challenge.

I'd hate for Dylan & Rommie to lose their humor entirely -- Harper & Rommie snarking at each other was some of the show's best moments -- but Dylan & Rommie more often playing straight man to Harper & Beka's snark gets a thumbs up from me. And definitely lose Dylan's cheesier or more inappropriate humor from the later seasons.

I don't think Rommie & Dylan would lose their humour entirely... more that they would learn to have a sense of humour along the way. I would totally get Rommie bickering with Harper straight away, and maybe it taking her a while to realise how much she likes it :)

And yes - Dylan losing his cheese is a must. I mean, what sort of line is "bring it!". Seriously, dude... I'm surprised the entire (maru)crew didn't groan and slap their faces each time he said it. It might have worked back when the happy!cheerful!Commonwealth was around, but with the new order.

I'd love to see some scenes between Dylan & Rommie with them learning to cope with the changes. That would be good, too.

I'd also like to see the Vedran empire not being as "good" as Dylan says it is. I mean, it was an Empire, right? What if it wasn't as perfect as Dylan remembers?

Somehow, the line "Harper, I had no idea you were such a ~cunning linguist" would have to be included.

I'd love to see some scenes between Dylan & Rommie with them learning to cope with the changes. That would be good, too.

That's definitely on my wishlist; more hitting on the culture clash. More Dylan, Rommie being shocked by things that the Maru crew & Tyr take for granted as being part of life, more assuming cultural or societal bases that are no longer true, more "We really can't go back, can we? :|"

I have always felt that the original Commonwealth and the Vedran Empire weren't as perfect as Dylan makes them out to be. (Like, the only flashback to that time that we get that I remember is of a black ops team assassinating the leader of a government, there was a lot of dark stuff going on there.)

I love the idea proposed on the thread of showing the Commonwealth pre-Fall more extensively, whether through a longer period before Dylan & the Andromeda get trapped in the black hole or through flashbacks throughout the first season.

(Like, the only flashback to that time that we get that I remember is of a black ops team assassinating the leader of a government, there was a lot of dark stuff going on there.)

I get that they were probably aiming for that (that the commonwealth wasn't as good as Dylan remembers), but I think it needs to be reinforced a lot more often. Or at least on a bigger scale. Maybe even more on a generalised & well-known level? Like... "I know it wasn't perfect, but it worked. There was more peace than war, and there was no room for petty vendettas."

That's definitely on my wishlist; more hitting on the culture clash. More Dylan, Rommie being shocked by things that the Maru crew & Tyr take for granted as being part of life, more assuming cultural or societal bases that are no longer true, more "We really can't go back, can we? :|"

Exactly! "We really can't go back, can we? :|" is perfect. The slow realisation that it's crumbled, gone and in ruins. They can try to change it all they want, but it's never going to be as good as it was.

I just made a post over at ExIsle and mentioned something else: in the show, it seems Dylan always managed to infect everyone with his optimism. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but.. it's just now how it would happen. I can understand the crew eventually coming around to his way of thinking, but I also think his way of thinking needs to change in a more drastic way.

I guess eternal optimism are Dylan's middle names, so that probably won't change :)

I also love how the casting changes recommended are mainly older actors! But I would like to see the original actors in a more gritty version of Andromeda. Imagine that: a reboot with the same actors. Playing slightly different roles. THAT'S a novel idea.

Yes, exactly. While I can buy that the crew's outlook on life would get a little more optimistic after prolonged Dylan Hunt exposure, I can't buy that it changes that rapidly or completely, or without Dylan's outlook making a similar transition to something less optimistic. Meeting in the middle, as it were.

Although Dylan will always be more optimistic than anyone else ever, or he wouldn't be Dylan, so. :D

Oh man....I could very easily fall in love with Enver Gjokaj as the new Harper or even as the new Andromeda....BUT when it comes to gender flipping, I'd be more into maybe making Dylan a chick and gender flipping Tyr and Beka over Rommie and Harper....I love my techies to be guys....And I'd KILL to see Gina Torres as a female Tyr.

ALTHOUGH, I have always found gender flipping an interesting concept...since I always shipped Harper/Trance, I'd be interested in seeing a genderflip there or hell, same sex it, just to spice it up. *shifty eyes*

And agreeing with what was said at exisle, give the show a REAL budget this time and don't get all holier than thou and have the "Kevin Sorbo" take over...that ruined the show.

Gah....This gives me such ideas!

The more I think about it, the more the idea of genderflipping the entire crew appeals to me. Seriously, so much potential there. How it would change Beka and Dylan's competing for command, Tyr's striving to prove genetically perfect to gain a mate, Harper's experience on Earth, Rommie's military career and exploration of humanity...SO MANY IDEAS. OMG.

Also, HELLS YES to the budget and the no-actors-as-execs caveat, those should be REQUIRED.

In a none flipping aspect....I think that Fran Kranz would be an AWESOME Harper.

^^Oh man....thinking what would happen to a female Harper on earth really makes me cringe. But I'd love the idea of a female Harper....no clue who would play her.....being with a male Trance...told you, I'm a shipper. And could you imagine a female Harper making the avatar for male Andromeda...although the name would have to change...Andromeda's a chick...maybe Apollo or something else greeky. I seriously would KILL to see Gina Torres as the female Tyr...that just screams of awesome, especially with all the sexual tension between her and Male!Beka...whose name would also have to change. SO MANY NAME CHANGES! Lol!

Someone freakishly wealthy needs to get on this STAT!

Fran would be a fantastic Harper.

Figuring out appropriate names may be the hardest part of this! ...Particularly for Andromeda. Because it has to be both a good name-for-a-person (and preferably one nickname-able so the humanoid avatar can be called something different from the main AI) and also a good name-for-a-warship.

...although Trance and Rev's names could stay the same, so that's something! (If we got far enough, so could Doyle's, for that matter.)
Date: 2010-08-26 04:00 am (UTC)

From: [identity profile] geeky-ginger.livejournal.com
Oh yeah....I mean if you stayed with the greek/roman sounding names, it makes it rather hard to find a name that could be cut into a nickname...the only name I can think of is something like Perseus which can be shortened to Percy....but "The Starship Perseus" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

But I agree that Trance, Doyle and Rev's names can stay....Harper can still be Harper...you'd just have to give him a feminine irish first name....Dylan can be Dylan still....Tyr...well, hell, you could just add an "a" and make it sound feminine....Beka's the tough cookie...maybe Beckett? And that's only if you're trying to keep the names similar to the original source material.

I like this genderbender idea...even if the only people I can cast in my head are Harper and Tyr. Lol

I've become set on RHW's suggestion of Freya for female!Tyr, since that was the name of the original concept character that then got split into Tyr and Beka. And then Freya Anasazi could have a short-lived marriage to Tyr of the Orca Pride!

As for Harper...Siobhan, maybe, but then you'd have to rename her cousin. Sinead? I'm attached to the idea of it being non-Anglicized, which also carries the implication "I go by my last name because SPACERS CAN'T PRONOUNCE MY FIRST NAME", which has always been one of my justifications for Harper anyway.

male!Beka I've been calling Ben in my head, IDK why though.

I'm determined that male!Beka would retain the daddy issues and history of emotionally abusive relationships. And also he would be a teetotaller until he accidentally becomes a Flash addict mid-season-one, and then he would go back to being a teetotaller but with added addiction angst and struggles.

I feel like female!Harper would probably play up the cute more than the humor, where male!Harper was the reverse, but both would have that "I'm harmless, please don't hurt me, AND NOW YOU'RE DEAD, BITCH" unexpected badass thing going on. And yeah, Earth would have been even harder on her than it was on male!Harper.

One thing that's occurred to me is that a male spaceship captain rescuing a female refugee and giving her a job does have vastly different implications and power dynamics from the original setup -- the "dump you back on that trashheap" scene would be even darker this way, for example. And would they even be able to get away with the cuddling and getting in each other's personal space and so on? I want male!Beka and female!Harper to be BFFs, but I feel like their dynamic would be heavily different. (And I feel like more random people would assume they were sleeping together. And male!Beka would be appalled that anyone would believe he would take advantage like that, while female!Harper quite cheerfully plays up the misconception.)

...actually, female!Harper is probably less of a flirt than male!Harper. Or maybe not less of a flirt, but her flirting is probably less overtly sexual, just because of her history on Earth.

...which then leads to the question of male!Rommie and whether he would imply that Harper built him as a sex toy. I can't decide.

male!Trance probably has to work a lot harder to be seen as harmlessly adorable. And female!Tyr...ooh, the Tamerlane plot would have to be completely overhauled. I wouldn't want to lose it altogether (although I definitely want to lose the ending of that particular plotline) so we might have to have female!Tyr vanish for a while, to ~hide her pregnancy. And then she turns up and is all "I just had to take care of some loose ends" and male!Beka and the rest of the crew is all "..." AND THEN eventually Tamerlane turns up with the Orca matriarch and female!Tyr is all "Oh, yeah, remember when I disappeared, I gave birth, surprise!"

...this is addictive. :D

Ooooo, so much to discuss here!

I've become set on RHW's suggestion of Freya for female!Tyr, since that was the name of the original concept character that then got split into Tyr and Beka. And then Freya Anasazi could have a short-lived marriage to Tyr of the Orca Pride!

^^Ooooo, see I didn't know that...Okay...I like Freya...especially if it's Gina Torres! Lol!

^^I always thought that too...that he went by Harper because no one could pronounce "Seamus"....and I for the life of me couldn't figure out how to pronounce Siobhan! So I'd call them Harper too. Lol!

male!Beka I've been calling Ben in my head, IDK why though.

^^Ben works for me...Benjamin Valentine....Ben...I like it...especially with the idea of Female!Harper calling him by Benjamin when she's really worried for him.

I'm determined that male!Beka would retain the daddy issues and history of emotionally abusive relationships. And also he would be a teetotaller until he accidentally becomes a Flash addict mid-season-one, and then he would go back to being a teetotaller but with added addiction angst and struggles.

^^Works for me...I always liked the "accidental addict" aspect of Beka because it added a little edge to her...they did the same thing with the character I love on Criminal Minds.

^^Yeah...I like the idea more that Female!Harper wouldn't use her looks to get her way...they'd come in handy and would make her more deadly....people would suspect a cute little woman to be able to kill them in many painful fashions. And HELL YEAH Earth would have been a lot harder on a Female!Harper than the male one...*shutters*...a lot harder.

Crap...hit send too early....where was I?

One thing that's occurred to me is that a male spaceship captain rescuing a female refugee and giving her a job does have vastly different implications and power dynamics from the original setup -- the "dump you back on that trashheap" scene would be even darker this way, for example. And male!Beka would be appalled that anyone would believe he would take advantage like that, while female!Harper quite cheerfully plays up the misconception.)

^^You know...I kinda thing they could still be super close and could still "cuddle." I see them kinda like Mal and Kaylee on Firefly.....Mal loved Kaylee like his sister and they got all up in each other's personal space while both would go down trying to protect the other....so you can still have that. Yes, people would assume they were sleeping together, but they could very easily still have the same close relationship that the original counterparts had.

Hell, I think that Female!Harper would built Male!Rommie much like original Harper did....perfection and I still think that even though Harper wanted Rommie in a sexual fashion as he built her, he'd never ever do anything with her. She's his creation and his baby....so I think Female!Harper would be the same way....yes, she's probably in love with Male!Rommie but it's in the way a creator is in love with his creation. Get what I'm saying?

The Tamerlane storyline could happen later down the line like when Tyr left the ship, Freya would leave like you said, to have the baby....stash it away, and then come back....possibly a little more hardened because from what I saw, Niets loved their children more than themselves so Freya would probably hate having to leave her son behind, but she must do it to protect him and his precious DNA.

And yes...it's ridiculously addicting! Now you gotta tell me your cast since I honestly can only think of who I'd have to play Freya......I mean, would you cast younger than in the original or older or stay the same?
Date: 2010-08-26 04:33 pm (UTC)

From: [identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com
Oh, I totally agree that female!Harper built male!Rommie to the same specs of perfection that original Harper did. male!Rommie is a miracle of engineering genius, dammit, and she's proud of that.

It's just the question of whether or not male!Rommie would call her out on it. "Did you wear gloves", indeed. Which comes down entirely to the characterization of male!Rommie, which I have not settled on at all.

possibly a little more hardened because from what I saw, Niets loved their children more than themselves so Freya would probably hate having to leave her son behind, but she must do it to protect him and his precious DNA.

So completely agreed. And no one would understand why she's come back harder, until the truth about Tam comes out and then there'd be...well, a lot of shock, honestly.

Um, casting! Yes. Gina, obviously, is Freya, and Enver is my male!Andromeda. I had Sonya Walger as female!Dylan, since she can do just the right mix of badass and in charge plus starry-eyed idealism. Sebastian Stan as male!Beka -- again, just the right mix of tough badass and damaged soul. Betsy Beutler as female!Harper, although she may be too old for the role but her portrayal of Joanie on The Black Donnellys is pretty much exactly how I imagine female!Harper. Well, minus the drug addiction and plus a genius knack for machines, but still.

Rev and Trance are virtually impossible to cast. But I'm leaning towards Colin Morgan for Trance, IDK.

It's just the question of whether or not male!Rommie would call her out on it. "Did you wear gloves", indeed. Which comes down entirely to the characterization of male!Rommie, which I have not settled on at all.

I feel like that Male Rommie would go through the same emotions and whatnot that his female counterpart went through....trying to understand humanity, the emotions that Harper allowed her to experience....so I think that with Female!Harper's obsession with the ship in general, Male!Rommie would probably ask the same question....I mean Female!Rommie asked it before she really came to love and respect Harper (I think, I can't remember) but once she reached that level of comfort with Harper, she didn't make those kinds of jokes anymore....hell, I mean after the Maggog world ship, you could see a desperate side to Rommie because Harper was suicidal and she didn't know what to do. I would love to see that in a gender reversal....Male!Rommie trying to be tender and express his desire for Female!Harper to live.....I mean by that point, Rommie loves her crew, loves Harper...so it would make for a fantastic scene in the gender reversed one. GAH! Imagine that ending scene with them in season 4 when she blew up....That "Be Safe" line kills me now but I feel like it would kill me even more if the genders were reversed.

Hmm....Let's see....I like your Dylan because, well, hell, PENNY! I'm on the fence for your choice of Enver, yet I can't think of anyone myself....I keep going back to Christopher Gorham but that could just be because I'm somewhat obsessed with him at the moment....and the idea of him in the "high guard uniform" is super hot...anyhoo...Rev can be I do like your choice of Sebastian Stan....I think though, my choice for Harper would be Allison Scagliotti (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm418092288/nm1270095) She's from Warehouse 13 and she can ROCK the genius techie with attitude (but with a damaged side) role....Rev can be practically anyone because of the prosthetic.....but Trance is a hard nut to crack....I kinda like the idea of Steven R. McQueen (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.werewolves.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/vampire-diaries-steven-mcqueen-jeremy-gilbert-.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.werewolves.com/werewolves-in-the-vampire-diaries/&h=775&w=550&sz=159&tbnid=iXqVPR-Jv-q9JM:&tbnh=142&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dvampire%2Bdiaries%2Bjeremy&zoom=1&hl=en&usg=__MbCG0tsPNNUfg4usp60eU8R9ND8=&sa=X&ei=v5p2TNrbGYP_8AbE3OitBw&ved=0CBoQ9QEwAQ) playing him....maybe that's just because I've seen him do the sensitive and caring while also be all kick ass.

GAH! This is way way too much fun

...wow, Steven R. McQueen is cute. I approve. I have no idea how well his acting style is suited for Trance so I will take your word for it.

Similarly, I haven't seen Allison Scagliotti in anything, but she looks like she's got about the right look for female!Harper. Put her in a lot of brightly-patterned t-shirts and cargo pants and it's dead-on.

I am, however, really attached to Enver!Andromeda, largely because I can picture him really, really selling a three-way conversation between himself. Can't you just picture that, how clearly he would delineate between mainframe!AI, hologram!AI, and android!AI? ...well, I can. *fangirls Enver some more*

Also, I went hunting names from Greek mythology in search of a good name for male!Andromeda and found Adrastos, which reportedly means "not inclined to run away". If you switched from Greek to Roman....you'd have a few more nicknameable names...like all of these: http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names/romannames.htm But if you want to stick with the Greek....nothing really epic pops up...I mean there's "Alexander" which means "Protector of mankind".....and....Leonidus....yeah...not much to work with there. Lol!

*looks at that list*

*immediately zeroes in on Andronicus*

It's perfect! I can't decide if I'd nickname him Andy or Ronnie, but c'mon. Andronicus. It even sounds like a warship.

Oooooooo, that is perfect! "On the Starship Andronicus, HOPE LIVES AGAIN!" *insert dramatic music*

I'd nickname is to Ronnie...so close to Rommie.
