You know what I want Doctor Who to go back to? Overlapping Companions.

In the new series, we've had Companion teams sometimes - Rose & Adam, Rose & Jack, Rose & Mickey, Rose & Sarah Jane, Martha & Jack, Donna & Martha, Donna & Martha & Jenny - but there's never any overlap. There's never been anything like 'Babs & Ian join the Doctor and Susan, they have adventures, Susan leaves, the Doctor & Babs & Ian have adventures, Vicki joins the Doctor & Babs & Ian, they have adventures, Babs & Ian leave, the Doctor & Vicki have adventures, Steven joins, etc.' Instead, we have Rose joins the Doctor, maybe there is a temporary Companion B who leaves after an episode or two, Rose leaves the Doctor, the Doctor emos about being lonely, Martha joins the Doctor. That's all we've gotten from the new series (with, obv, names swapped out regularly).

It's always last one in, first one out. And that's not an inherently bad formula, but it's gotten very repetitive. Bring back overlapping Companions! Just to break it up.

It would also mean we'd have to have more Team TARDIS groups, but that has nothing to do with my wanting it, noooo.

(Also, I was rewatching The War Games today, and hee. Remember when the sonic screwdriver did stuff like drive screws?)

(ALSO also, but completely unrelated, have some Animorphs-related YAY)

Ya know...I don't mind the idea of doubling up on Companions...I just want him to have a Male companion eventually...I'd like to see the dynamics of that.

And Duuuuude! I freaking loved Animorphs! Could you imagine the awesomeness if they did the show now? The special effects would be amazing!

Yesss. I don't want to take away the female companion 'cause there's so few steady roles for women in mainstream [/soapbox] but a male companion + a female companion would be so much win omg. Or two male companions for a Ben/Polly/Jamie sort of dynamic maybe? idk.

Live-action Animorphs would be so much more badass if they did it these days. I can only imagine what the morphing would look like and glee loudly.

I just think it could be really neat with two companions again...maybe for once you could have the companions fall for each other instead of for the Doctor.

Gah! Maybe if they re-release the books, and they gain popularity again, they'll attempt the show again. It would be SO BADASS!

Companion/Companion ships are my favorite type of Doctor Who ships, so you know I'm down for that!

WE CAN BUT HOPE. And hope really, really hard.

I'm personally just getting tired of every companion, male or female, falling madly in love with the Doctor...okay..with Tennant, it's understandable...but I want change...gather two companions, have them fall in love, the Doctor no more than a outside viewer to it all.

SURPRISE ME MOFFAT!

I would definitely love to see overlapping companions, and... you know, more than one companion on the TARDIS at a time in general.

Though to be fair, I get why they didn't do it with Ten, because his relationships with people are such that... he doesn't work well with more than one person on his TARDIS at a time, at least for any extended period of time. (And if I were more awake right now, I would probably TL;DR in your post about why he doesn't, but, uh... Just consider yourself lucky. XD)

I am still holding out hope that River will show up several times a season for a while. Travelling on the TARDIS long-term (with or without another companion there) seems unlikely, but if she's not in and out on a fairly regular basis, I will be so disappointed.

Ten really doesn't work well with multiple-companions. The Ten/Rose/Mickey matchup is painful -- and the sucky part is that Ten and Mickey work pretty well together when it's just the two of them, but as soon as it's both Rose and Mickey, Ten is too busy being ~cute~ with companion prime to pay any attention to companion beta.

If that makes sense.

(Pssh, like TL;DR ever throws me off.)

I'm hoping the same thing. I don't think she'll become a proper Companion, but she really needs to be a regularly recurring character.

That makes perfect sense and is pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I really do like Ten and Mickey when Rose is somewhere else, but just... gah. Ten has issues with being a dick. I love him dearly and always will, but it's true. It's part of why I love him.

(And I so wish I were coherent enough to TL;DR at you, because there are few things I love more than writing essays on my favorite characters, but... I'm shocked I'm managing to put together complete sentences at the moment.)

I'm still mildly pissy that she wasn't even mentioned in the specials when there is no way she didn't know Ten before the Library episodes. *Sigh* There are two years between Journey's End and End of Time, so it's not like I can't assume she's somewhere in the gaps, but that won't stop me sulking a little.

I APPROVE OF THIS IDEA. You get so many more dynamics that way, and you get to see different sides of the characters who stay through some changes. Tegan is different with Nyssa than Turlough is different WITHOUT Tegan etc.

...Is it bad that my first thought re:Animorphs was "I CAN MAKE NEW TOBIAS ICONS"? > >

Yesss. And if done properly, it really can help ease the transition between companions. "Look at how much Companion A and Companion B complement each other's awesomeness! Aww, Companion A is leaving, isn't that sad, won't you miss her, but Companion B is still here and awesome!" ...I really like companion teams.

THAT IS NEVER A BAD THOUGHT. More images to play with is a good thing. ♥

It surprises me that it hasn't been done in a while. Every screenwriter knows that scenes have way more possibilities when there are three characters involved and not just two. I would love to see Doctor + male companion + female companion.

I suppose I'll have to add that to the list of "things I want but will not get from Doctor Who." (You probably don't want to know what else is on this list.)

And Animorphs YAY! I have almost all of the old ones. Because I'm a nerd like that.

My list of "things I want but will not get from Doctor Who" is getting pretty long at this point, but companion teams and overlapping companions is a major point on it. ...someday I will actually write out the full list and marvel at all the pie in the sky wishing on it.

I love my Animorphs collection, although a good bit of it is in pretty ratty condition now. They were a major influence on me growing up. Oh, KA, influencing my morality and my views on war and my preference for morally gray good & bad guys and emotionally-unhealthy-relationships in fiction...

We should totally make and post our lists of things we want but will not get from Doctor Who.

Animorphs influenced all that for me, too. It's no wonder I was obsessed with them. It makes me wonder if they were healthy.

I'm in for that!

They probably weren't healthy, come to think. But I'm sure there were much less healthy things we could have been obsessed with at the time! ...Somewhere!
