Literally all of my thoughts about this episode are being overwhelmed by the fact there was an Alpha Centauri cameo. GUYS. ALPHA CENTAURI WAS IN THIS EPISODE. The transmission started and there was that high-pitched voice and my brain went "lol that sounds like Alpha Centauri" AND THEN IT WAS OH MY GOD.
ALPHA CENTAURI, YOU GUYS.
Mark Gatiss. You are forgiven for every lackluster episode you've ever written. Of anything, no matter if I watched it or not. You put Alpha Centauri in an episode of new Who. :D :D: D
(Were other people spoiled for Alpha Centauri's appearance? Was that a spoiler that leaked? Because I had NO IDEA and now I can't stop smiling about it.)
Um. Other things. Can I remember other things? (Alpha Centauri!)
The running joke of "it's a movie" culminating in the Doctor's delight at referencing Frozen was pretty cute.
The idea of having Nardole forced to ask Missy for help is wonderful and I just wish we'd gotten to see more of it, instead of leaving it offscreen for most of the episode.
Victorian-era colonel is okay with reptilian aliens on Mars but can't wrap his head around a woman police officer. Men. (Followed by Bill forgiving him for his Victoria attitude because he is, actually, Victorian.)
Bill is pretty wonderful in this. She doesn't get a lot to do, but she's got attitude and her trying to bond with the Empress over being the only two women present was fantastic. (I wish she'd gotten more to do, honestly. Both she and the Doctor seemed very sidelined in this. It's mostly about the Ice Warriors and the soldiers, and that's not really a criticism, it's just that I watch Doctor Who for the Doctor and his companions, you know?)
And I do very much like the way the conflict was resolved.
But mostly: ALPHA CENTAURI :D :D :D
