chicafrom3It weirds me out that the Matthews apparently never met Maya's father before. The girls have been friends for essentially their whole lives! Katy and Kermit's split seems to have been relatively recent as of the beginning of the series! WHY DOES NO ONE KNOW WHO HE IS.
I think it actually bothers me MORE because the show has otherwise been so good about "even though this is the first appearance of X on screen, everyone has the appropriate level of knowledge". Well, aside from Riley not recognizing Uncle Eric while Auggie does, but that was Rule Of Funny.
Was he just super absent even when he and Katy were still together? He never bothered to meet his daughter's best friend or the family she spent all her time with? THIS MAKES NO SENSE TO ME.
I missed the first ~five minutes of this episode because of scheduling errors if somehow this was explained then. But I doubt it was.
He said he was going out for a walk and he'd be back in an hour!
Okay, so apparently he left when Maya was nine? Or he left nine years ago, when Maya was five or six. I'm unclear on this. Maybe it's the latter and Maya and Riley became BFFs when they were seven. And Katy is still super hung up about it all these years later to the point where she acts like he just left. This timeline still makes no sense to me.
"You think forgiveness leads to peace? No! It leads to war in a movie theatre!"
"Farkle, we are never going to the movies with you again."
Anyway, Maya and her dad have a really emotional and meaningful connection and he tells her that she was just a little girl who couldn't possibly be responsible for a grown man's behavior and that makes up for the fact that I don't understand the timeline at all. He's still a dick, though. Write your daughter occasionally. Send her a Christmas card and a birthday present.
"You found a job? Your job was to stay."
GOOD ANSWER MAYA. *hugs her*
And then there's like a painfully sweet Maya & Cory conversation. "What did you want from me?" "Maya, did you forgive yourself?" Jeez, this episode. THAT HUG.
Sabrina Carpenter is frigging amazing.
