Before anything else I want to talk about the cinematography.
This episode was advertised as being "black and white and living color!" or whatever the exact phrasing was, but (at least on my TV? maybe this is my problem and not false advertising?) the "black and white" sequences were actually blue. That's not really a complaint, just a note; the first shot of Rumplestiltskin, in vibrant, bloody red, stepping into that blue-monochrome cinescape -- that was, to say the least, glorious. And then the shot of Rum dumping tons of gold on Frankenstein's floor ...
Seriously, beautiful work. Well done, team.
(I got a bit of a "The Post-Modern Prometheus" vibe, which is also not a complaint, and which is probably due to both episodes being influenced by old school Frankenstein movies rather than OUAT taking stylistic notes from TXF.)
On to actual episode content:
> The fact that the only way to keep Gold from killing Hook was to ask him what Belle would want ... "Murdering someone isn't the greatest first impression" doesn't work because on some level he doesn't believe he can win her over again, but "What would Belle want?" works because he doesn't want to let her down again. ♥ Break my freaking heart.
> And then the bit when he tries True Love's Kiss in the hospital, which was so much worse. The look on his face, the hope that when she wakes up she'll remember again and then she starts screaming and he just backs out mumbling "I'm sorry" over and over again and seriously this is completely heartbreaking. AND THEN HE GIVES HER THE CHIPPED CUP TO TRY TO TRIGGER HER MEMORY and oh Belle's face and Gold's face and oh this isn't really okay with me (SHE BROKE THE CUP D: GOD WRITERS WHYYY WOULD YOU DO THIS)
> Shows I don't expect to have serious conversations between the heroes about letting someone die to protect their privacy: OUAT. Shows that nevertheless have serious conversations between the heroes about letting someone die to protect their privacy: OUAT.
> "E.T." wasn't a movie about finding something magical, Leroy. /missing the point
> Greg's ringtone is Star Wars! You win, Greg. (Although who programs someone into their phone as "Her"? Is this a thing that I'm just not aware of or is Greg kind of creepy about women?)
> Barbra Hershey is so creepy. Brilliant casting. The scene in Gold's shop was disturbing on so many levels. WTAF happened between them?
> Frankenstein/Whale is also kind of disturbing in both worlds. Which, you know. Intentional. Effective, though.
"You caused this! The things you do!"
And then the scene where he just watches his brother/monster whaling (pun unintended) on their dad until he's dead with no visible emotion, and then that's followed up by his brother basically requesting assisted suicide ... Dude, seriously, seek therapy. Archie's not dead, you know.
> It is my sincerest hope that Frankenstein's world has psychotropic weather.
> You know, for an episode set immediately after Belle was shot and lost her memory, this episode had very little Emilie de Ravin in it.
> I don't usually have a very high opinion of Jared Gilmore's acting skills (sorry, Jared) but he was great as Cora-impersonating-Henry. Just close enough to regular Henry to fool Regina, just off enough to make it obvious something was wrong to the audience. Well done.
> "I ate my boyfriend." Ruby wins all one-upping contests. Also WHY IS SHE SHIPPABLE WITH EVERYONE. WHY.
> This episode may have involved a significant amount of me shouting "No, Regina, don't listen to her!" at the TV. I regret nothing.
> Emma fails at subtlety, I gotta say. "WHAT DID YOU SEE?? You know. For the, um. Report." (There was also a weird musical transition between that scene and the next, I don't know what to make of that.)
> "Rumplestiltskin and Captain Hook had a fight, someone got hurt, we weren't sure if Dr. Frankenstein could fix him but he did." This is an actual line from my show. ♥♥♥
> And finally, Gold calls in his favor with Emma. Finally.
Next week, the return of Jorge Garcia!
