ageless_aislynn posted a spam thread, and I took the opportunity to do a combined squee/picspam that I've been wanting to do for a while. I like the way it came out, so I'm sharing it with you. Cool? Cool.
Below the cut find A Newbie's Guide To The Black Donnellys. If you are on my flist and have not yet gotten hooked on this show, read on. If you are on my flist and are already in love with the show, gawk at the pretty pictures. If you are not on my flist...hi!
Here's how it is:
There were four Donnelly brothers:
Jimmy
& Tommy
& Kevin
& Sean.
Jimmy was the oldest. Kind of a screw-up. His leg was trashed when he was run over by a car as a kid, and he limps. He won the Firecracker Lounge
in a poker game. He's addicted to drugs, and he craves respect.
This is Jimmy's girlfriend Joanie. She's adorable. Also addicted to drugs, and has been known to sleep with other guys to get her stash. But she's adorable, and she really loves Jimmy.
Anyway. Jimmy craves respect and will go to great measures to get it, which sets him at odds with
Tommy. Tommy is the second-oldest of the brothers, but the most responsible. See, that car that ran Jimmy over when he was a kid? Tommy was driving it.
And it scared the hell out of him and put him on the right path. He was determined to get out of the neighborhood, and he was going to art school, and everyone thought he could do it. Except he was so determined to protect Jimmy and make sure none of his brothers ever got hurt again that he just kept getting dragged back in.
This is Jenny. Jenny and Tommy have been One True Loves since they were small children. Except Jenny grew up and married a teacher who turned out to be scum. Except by the time he got himself killed and she found out just how much scum he was, Tommy had gotten so tangled up in the criminal world trying to protect his brothers that she wasn't real interested in getting herself hurt by letting herself fall further in love with him. Sucks. At least they had sex in the second episode, that was something.
This is Kate Farrell. Her husband Huey was the head of the Irish mob in the neighborhood. Tommy killed him to save Jimmy's life, only Kate doesn't know that and keeps calling him around to look after her and her young son Matthew. They are very obviously attracted to each other and she would like to jump his bones, but the fact that he killed her husband and stole from her makes it all very awkward. Also, Jenny.
Anyway, whenever Tommy is forced into doing some crime, if he can count on one of his brothers to help him out, it's
Kevin. Kevin is adorable and sweet and has mad chemistry with inanimate objects. Jackets, sandwiches, cereal. Kevin also can be said to have a minor gambling problem, in the same way that the Atlantic Ocean can be said to be vaguely damp. He persists in believing that he is incredibly lucky and an amazing gambler, despite never having won a best since he was small. He is very loyal and hates being forced to choose between Tommy and Jimmy. He also hates it when people use sarcasm on him.
Kevin does not have a girl and has been jokingly referred to as "asexual".
Finally, there's
Sean. Seany is the baby of the family, and the pretty boy, and everybody loves Seany. He's cute and charismatic and all the girls love him. His brothers tend to try to keep him out of the crime life to protect him, but this doesn't always work, leading him to first wind up in the hospital near death, and then later forcing Jimmy to hire him.
This is Kim. Kim, as you can see, had a thing for Tommy, and Tommy was digging on her, too. Then Kim met Sean.

Anyway, Kim was there when Sean got beaten badly enough to land in the hospital, and she tried (and failed...but c'mon, the girl was up against armed mobsters, the fact that she tried is awesome enough) to defend him. She sat by him in the hospital despite barely knowing him, but after he got out she was run off both by Mama Donnelly's hostility and the fact that Sean was insecure enough about his appearance to not call her.
Eventually Sean got over his insecurities and met Nadine, who was adorable.
And he gave her a mix CD and they were adorable together and she talked him into working for his GED so he could finish his education. Cheers for Nadine.
Well, that's the boys and their girls. Other important players:
Helen Donnelly, the boys' mom. Very protective. Tends to run off any Girls Who Aren't Jenny.
Bobby Donnelly, the boys' dad. Died when they were young. Murdered by Italians.
Louie Downtown, an Italian bookie. Jimmy&Kevin&Sean kidnapped him in a misguided attempt to pay off Kevin's gambling depts, which led to Sean getting beaten bloody, which led to Jimmy killing Louie, which led to Tommy killing Huey and Sal and plunging headfirst into the world of organized crime.
Huey Farrell, head of the Irish mob, Kate's husband. Killed by Tommy after he sold Jimmy out to the Italians.
Alo, head of the Italian mob.
Nicky, major player in the Italian mob, and one of the Top Most Likely to try to deal with the Donnellys. Initiated the attack on Sean.
Dokey Farrell. Huey's brother and current head of the Irish mob. Used to be fairly close to Bobby Donnelly. May have assisted in killing Bobby, and certainly hates our boys.
Ian Reilly, Jenny's dad. Hates the Donnellys.
Samson, a one-time fling of Jenny's turned stalker. Creepy.
Whitey, a small-time bookie and drug dealer. Thinks he's in love with Joanie.
And, of course:
Joey Ice Cream, our narrator, a childhood friend of the brothers turned accomplice. He narrates the entire story from prison, where he is being pressed for answers about the Donnellys; he talks to anyone who will listen, be it the cops, his lawyer, the guard, a priest, a nurse, anyone. He also lies to anyone who will listen, and we can never be entirely sure when he's telling us the truth.
The story takes place over three basic timelines: the present, wherein Joey sits in prison and tells his story to various people as well as the audience; the near-past (2002-3-ish), wherein the Donnelly brothers start finding themselves falling deeper and deeper into the criminal lifestyle through very little fault of their own; and the far-past, the events that shaped the wee!Donnellys into the people they became as young adults.
Okay, that's the gist of the characters. The plot can be summed up as "Hot Irish boys do crime badly". The humor is snarky and lovely, with lines like:
Joey: "The Irish have always been victims of negative stereotypes. I mean people think we're all drunks and brawlers and sometimes it makes you so mad all you wanna do is get drunk and punch somebody!"
and
Kevin: "Tommy. Me and Jimmy went downtown with goodness in our hearts to work out a deal. But Louie starts threatening me, I mean what was I supposed to do?"
Tommy: "Kevin, everybody knows who did this. You kidnap somebody, they're not supposed to know who you are."
Kevin: "Tommy, you think we're stupid? We wore masks!"
Tommy: "You went down there with goodness in your hearts but you wore masks?"
and much, much more.
