015. "I Believe", Altar Boyz
"I Believe", from the Off-Broadway musical Altar Boyz, as sung by Ryan Duncan, David Josefsberg, Andy Karl, Tyler Maynard, and Scott Porter.
Altar Boyz is an affectionate parody of boy bands and Christian rock. It's framed as a concert given by the eponymous band as they try to save the souls of a theater full of New Yorkers (or, in regional productions and tours, citizens of whatever city they're in), and over the course of the night the bandmates are forced to confront their own demons.
"I Believe" is the final song, and the emotional climax. Immediately prior to this song, the band has basically broken up, as each member (save for Abe, the only non-Christian member of this Christian boyband) confesses they've signed solo recording deals. Abe is at a loss for what to do -- and then he pulls out a song Matthew was working on unsuccessfully earlier, and redefines the lyrics.
At the very least, I insist that you watch this video of the final off-Broadway performance of this song. Seriously. Go watch it. It makes me cry every time.
I believe that I came to know you for a reason
I believe that the things that you say will come true
I believe that with you in my life I'll make it
I believe in you
