Yay, Chess!
Yes, today was the day when I dragged my parents to the NCT conservatory production of Chess in Raleigh. And it was awesome. And my parents now understand my love for this musical. They have not been converted to thinking that Chess is the Best Musical Everrrrr, but this is better than nothing.
Notes on the production:
- They used the Broadway script (the single match split between Bangkok and Budapest, Florence meeting her 'father', etc.). Not my favorite of the many scripts, but hey, beggars can't be choosers, it's still Chess, and they still did an awesome job with it.
- Their Freddy left me cold in a couple places, but then he nailed Pity The Child like you wouldn't believe and now I love him.
- Florence was just brilliant. Brilliant voice, brilliant acting skills. Just absolutely fantastic.
- Yes, Where I Want To Be made me cry. It always does.
- I am astonished by the fantasticness (that's not a word...) of the set design. Because it was. Fantastic. And gorgeous. And techno in the best possible way.
- The lighting designer on the other hand gets a million minus points for his overuse of followspots. One followspot maybe I could've overlooked, but there were just wayyyyy too many to shrug it off. *scowl*
- But all in all: It was brilliant and I loved it and I'm happy now. :D
