It's no good crying, you'll rust yourself again
Week 2 of
mini_nanowrimo done, and I accomplished my goal of at least 100 words a day. I hate at least half of what I wrote this week, but at least it's writing...
Rundown: "with you/without you" is the second installment in the ongoing Michael/Liam story, started with "kissing liam donnelly" last week; I don't know how I feel about it. It does what I needed it to, anyway. "deathsong" is kind of cool, I like playing with Irish mythology. I'm still not entirely sure what's going on in "big bad world one" -- teh Niki compared it to "Memento" which is fairly accurate as it goes -- and I am also terribly confused as to what the premise of "slipping" actually is. Why do I keep writing things where I don't know what's going on? "interlude #1: liam" is part three in the Michael/Liam story, except it's more an interlude than an actual part of the story, hence the title, and again I don't know how I feel about it. I know for sure that "bibliogeist" isn't finished as is, but I don't know where to go from there, and really the thing I like best about it is the title. (And Shire, the bookstore cat.) "more than anything" is just one cliche from start to finish, isn't it.
So, yeah. I think "deathsong" is the only thing I produced this week that I actually like.
Totally unrelated, I'm starting to seriously think about Christmas shopping. In RL shopping, I have not yet purchased but am fairly sure I know what to get for teh Niki, my dad, and the little brother. I am much more lost on what to get my mom and the older sister. Am I supposed to get something for the new brother-in-law whom I have not yet met? *confused*
In LJ shopping, I have not yet purchased anything for anyone, but I have wishlists bookmarked for
superduperkc,
ladyfiresprite, and
oc_pixie. If you have posted a wishlist and I have somehow missed it, now's the time to let me know; if you haven't but planned to, I'll keep an eye out for it. I'll be putting up a wishlist eventually.
On a lighter note, meme! Snagged from
harbek. Except I was pedantic and replaced all the citations of "play" with "musical" since that's what they're really asking about.
Name 10 of your favorite Broadway musicals
1. Chess
2. [title of show]
3. tick, tick...BOOM!
4. Zanna, Don't!
5. bare
6. RENT
7. Wicked
8. In The Heights
9. Evil Dead: The Musical
10. The Drowsy Chaperone
Have you ever seen these shows live? If so, where?
Uh. Chess, in Raleigh. ...yeah, I live in the middle of freakin' nowhere.
What's your favorite song from musical 2?
Uhhh. "Secondary Characters"? Or "I Am Playing Me". Or "Nine People's Favorite Thing". Or "Die, Vampire, Die". OKAY, ALL OF THEM.
Who's your favorite character from musical 4?
Tank. Which is probably kind of sad, because he's actually very minor.
What's your favorite scene from musical 5?
Ivy confiding in Nadia that she's pregnant. In part because "All Grown Up" makes me tear up, in part because I really like the reminder that they used to be friends and could conceivably go back to being that way.
What's your favorite lyric from musical 8?
"You father said "Usnavi"/That's what we'll name the baby"
"It really said "US Navy," but hey/I worked with what they gave me okay"
I don't know why it makes me crack up every single time.
From musical 10, which character are you most like?
Man In The Chair, sad as that is to admit.
Can you quote every line from musical 1?
Pretty much.
How many times have you seen musical 3?
Bootlegs? A bunch of times. Live? ...never.
If you could be anyone from musical 6, who would it be? Why?
Maureen. She's just so...self-confident. I envy that.
What's your favorite song from musical 7?
"The Wizard And I"
What's your favorite quote from musical 9?
"Death...is...a...stupid...bitch."
Out of all these musicals, which one is your absolute favorite?
Chess, hands-down.
Who's the best Broadway actor?
Raul Esparza. Uh, duh. *fangirls hard*
Who's the best Broadway actress?
Julia Murney. That's probably fairly biased an opinion.
What's the best musical they turned into a movie?
In terms of the original musical? RENT, likely, in my opinion. Not the best movie musical, though, for that I'd go...I dunno. West Side Story? Okay, honestly, I don't think movies often do a really great job of capturing the energy of stage musicals.
Is there a musical you DON'T like?
Yes.
If so, which one? Why?
Spring Awakening, which is way overhyped and leaves me cold. Cats and Phantom of the Opera, admittedly in large parts because I have problems with Lloyd-Webber when he's not working with someone who'll keep him in line (*coughTimRicecough*), but also because T.S. Eliot? Wins, and Lloyd-Webber just destroys his poetry.
Do you think the movie versions are better, or the original Broadway musicals?
Almost always the stage version is better, which has a lot to do with energy and the fact that they were written for the stage.
(When the movie version is the original, that's different. Except for Evil Dead: The Musical, which isn't better than the movie version, but it's also not worse, because it embraces its source material and its differences at the same time.)
