Timeo Danaos, Et Dona Ferentes.

Watched Lola Rennt today. Was very, very good. Seriously: cinematographically it's gorgeous; the set design is perfect, costuming deserves awards, and I'm in love with the lighting designer. They do a really good job of emphasizing the surreality, and Lola stands out from her surroundings always, both because her surroundings are in neutral tones and she's all bright colors, and because of the constant use of backlighting to separate her out.

Also, at the end of scenario two? There's this one gorgeous shot, where it's all done from above, and Manni is spread-eagled on the pavement, this splash of dull blue surrounded by black, and then one bright spot of color in Lola's hair. It's ridiculously fantastic.

Oh, yeah, the script. It's a great script, too. It's surreal and it's quantum and it's internally consistent and it makes you think. ♥ Little bit in love with Lola. Not going to lie.

Next up: Doctor Who: The Daleks. Cheers!

Tomorrow, my mom leaves for Maine for a week. :( Yeah. I wish I was going with her. I loathe this region.

Oh I love Lola Rennt! You did watch it with subtitles, right? I have to see it again sometime...

Haha, yeah, I have no German skills. XD But it's fun to listen to! And read along in English!

It's such a great movie.

There's a dubbed version, which just seems weird to me. So that's why I was asking.
So... do you think she had 'abilities' to turn back the clock somehow, and try again? Like, 'lives' in a computer game, and she learnt as she went? that's what I think. Other people think it's more 'three possible outcomes'.

But I think she partially learnt as she went, on some subconcious level.

It's all mixed up with quantum theory in my head, so this might not make perfect sense, but:

I don't think she had a conscious ability to reset. I do, however, think that all three versions happened, probably simultaneously, and leaked over into one another on a quantum level. So Lola doesn't consciously remember holding up the store with Manni, but the ability to use a gun bleeds over. And so on. The cat is both alive and dead. I sound pretentious now, 'm sorry.

nah, that makes sense. I hadn't thought of it before.
I love how each time, she's only a few seconds different each start, with the dog and the boy in the stairwell. But how much of a difference it makes. It's just such a great concept.

It's a brilliant concept, and a brilliant movie. ♥ Hardcore.

What do you think about the idea that it was 'dated' after only a few years after it was made? I don't think it is obsolete or anything like that obviously.

[identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It really doesn't feel dated to me--it's still clever, interesting, and, y'know, gorgeous on a visual level. I honestly don't think there would be that many changes if it were being shot today instead of ten years ago.

Yeah. I think the only thing that would be different is probably the animations... Maybe. They're not that bad, and it's not like they'd 'work' being all cgi or 3d or something.

I love that film, but I've only ever seen it without subtitles. I speak German enough to get by, and enough to basically follow the film, but I'm sure there were lots of things I missed.

[identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I probably missed quite a bit, too, given that I would periodically stop paying attention to the subtitles to ooh and ahh over the production values. *cough* I'm a tech geek. I live with it.

I wish I were more like that, actually, because being a literary person I think I overlook a lot of what makes cinema unique and special, because I'm concentrating on the narrative and dialogue.

I think they're both valid methods of film-watching, but yours probably tends to piss off fewer people. Honestly, I have a list of at least twelve people who won't watch films with me anymore because while they're trying to understand the plot I'm going "Ooh! Ooh! Look at the angle of that lighting! Isn't that beautiful? Wow, I wish I could meet the costume designer for this..." :D

[identity profile] petrichor-fizz.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Probably a balance is the best thing, but hey, whatever floats your boat, right?

[identity profile] chicafrom3.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Usually the best idea. :D
