if we were mathematicians you would not be here
Confession: I hate math. (This is probably not a surprise to anyone.) Therefore I'm grateful that they basically reduced all the math in this episode to "P versus NP is a really difficult and possibly unsolvable math problem and if anyone solved it ZILLIONS OF DOLLARS". I can follow that.
OH HI JEREMY JORDAN. Still playing douchebags, I see. But at least this time it's a fairly likeable douchebag! I like it when I can like you!
SHE ASKED FOR $5K AND HE GAVE HER $20K SO SHE COULD "BUY THE YOUNG MAN OUT OF [HER] LIFE". OMG.
I just have a lot of feelings about Joan and Sherlock and their relationship and the way they view each other and the ways they try to help each other.
And also that Joan accepts the money but opts to handle things with Joey her own way. SO PERFECT.
"You know if he had taken my offer I was going to pay you back, right?"
"You know I have about as much interest in money as I do in Hummel figurines."
LIKE. SERIOUSLY. And then he offers to go with her to the cemetery because he wants to pay his respects to the man who changed Joan Watson's path in life, and I JUST. *still flailing about that*
I'm also amused by the fact that the case was solved by Joan noticing that "hey, those are some cheap-ass beers".
I just really liked the way the A and B plots were handled in this episode, that they mainly affected each other because of how they affected Joan's emotional state...and that the breakthrough in the case came from offhand discussion of the money Sherlock was loaning her. And that it came with Massive Exposition Dump on Joan's backstory. I LIKE BACKSTORY. MORE OF THAT, PLEASE.
And there was so much Marcus, and he was in top form. Snarking at Holmes about how oh no, the police department hadn't closed a case in ages, they were planning on just shutting their doors until the great Sherlock Holmes deigned to help them catch killers -- that is a moment that should get listed in all Great Moments Of Elementary. And the look on his face when Sherlock climbed up on that cab to check the security camera. And the way all three of them -- Marcus, Joan, Sherlock -- looked completely clueless when the significance of N vs. NP was being explained to them. (That might actually be my favorite part of the episode. All three very, very intelligent characters, but high-level computer math? WAY OVER THEIR HEADS. And they're not ashamed to admit it.)
And, you know, Joan's reaction to half-naked-mathematician in the living room. Also an excellent moment.
Next week looks great. "Can you please just stop saying the word 'nefarious'?"
