Maybe instead of things falling apart, Ned would grow up and realize he can't control every detail and doesn't need to try, and Chuck would be willing to give a little on the need to try new things.
I would hope so. It seems that that was track they were on - Ned accepted Chuck moving next door, e.g. I feel like it would have happened (if character development was consistent, that is). But because it's TV, someone might've had a sordid love affair on the side and they would've killed each other because that makes for dramatic TV and I suppose that's what people like to watch TV for...
