chicafrom3File under 'things I didn't know I wanted': Joan Watson getting into a baton fight with a woman named Kitty on the streets of New York. Yes, good.
I really like that things didn't go back to the status quo by the end of the episode. Sherlock really damaged the trust between them -- and between him and the NYPD -- at the end of last season; it's good to see that while everyone can act like adults and agree that he's an excellent criminal consultant and they can use his input and they can all work together and interact, no one's suggesting that Joan immediately forgive him everything, move back into the brownstone, and go back to being partners.
Although obviously they'll go back to being partners eventually. OBVIOUSLY. I'm just glad Sherlock's going to have to work to earn his redemption.
(Also, I know it's completely unfeasible given the format of episodic TV, but the beginning of this episode convinced me that I really wanted to see at least a few episodes set prior to Sherlock's return with Joan solving crimes on her own and partnering up with Marcus when necessary. I would totally watch that.)
The addition of Kitty into things should complicate matters, too. The conversation she has with Joan at the end is interesting; despite what she says she obviously does not see joining up with Sherlock as 'moving towards something'; I wonder what she's running away from and just how quickly it'll catch up with her. (Also interesting: she's not as quick a learner as Sherlock expects/anticipates/is used to from Joan. Hmm.)
(I assume Joan took custody of Clyde when Sherlock went back to London? Does Sherlock's return mean that Clyde will be returning to the brownstone, or staying with Joan? Joint custody? Maybe Ms. Hudson's looking after him, what do I know.)
All in all, a solid season opener with a cleverly-executed crime.
